Just joined a gym. what else is good?

Recommended Posts

Decided I want to get back into the long walk hunts. After a motorcycle accident I never really got back into shape. so today I went down and got it going 2 days solo and one day with a trainer. figure the 3 day a week at minimum route. everything was great till I went to the locker and some one broke into it and stole my wallet. Found it missing only a hundred bucks at least. Ahh well could have been worse my hunting license was still there.

So what's good for those off days to prep for a hunt, what's a good nutrition regiment?

I am totally new to this. I have never been in a gym before.

I'm planning on getting out there with a pack and hiking / scouting, unfortunately I will only be able to get out every other weekend. wanting to get a good routine going.

And yea first day there, coarse I had my car broke into the first day at college as well. unlucky some times.

I would stay with the gym , don't let one idiot keep you from changing your fate. The best thing I have found is do your best to do some sort of exercise every day no matter how small. If 10 pushups is all you can squeeze in do it. You will feel better. I just started walking with my wife again in the evenings and I wear my pack with weight in it, works very well. Keep it simple and make it a plan on your calendar like an appointment. Push ups pull ups sit ups long walks. Eat the best you can, small meals more times a day and don't eat late.

what gym? that's some b.s. id probably want to go to a different one.

theres a lot more benefits to working out then there is to just hiking so I wouldn't take that advice.

if it was me id work with the trainer the 3 days then on my own at the gym another 2-3 days.

these are some good trails all over north phx and the white tanks. There's no need to travel far to hike to add hiking to your routine. There's nothing in a gym that will better prepare you for carrying a heavy pack than carrying a heavy pack.

Take a pack to the gym and get on the stair climber. Squats, front squats, cleans and thrusters are great power lifts. Really help build cores and leg strength which is real important for hunting with a heavy pack. I like to mix in lighter weight with a lot of reps and a couple of days per week with heavy weight. Legs have done well with this but each person is different.

Depends on what your goals are as far as nutrition. You need to be eating a good amount of protein if you're lifting or exercising hard. I like the cliff protein bars for quick and easy protein intake. Watch the bars with sugar alcohols and eating too many of those..... They mess your stomach up.

Should have joined a good

, solid dojo teaching mma. You would receive flexibility training, exhilarating workouts and learned self defense. And admit it, wouldn't you love to put that theiving gym rat in a hammer lock?

I only bring my membership card and DL to the gym. The wife got me into joining her in the various classes and yoga. I get a much better work out than doing my own solo thing. (Plus some very good looking gals in the classes). I was never into using trainers.

My other fitness favorite is trail running with my dog. I wear my day pack and do about 2 to 3 miles. I am yet to wear the dog out however.

My dog will run 15-20 miles and when we get back to the truck instead of laying down in the shade he is out chasing squirrels or sniffing around. Wish i had his energy.
