Draw Questions

Recommended Posts

I am with BC777 on this, all situations can be explained pretty easy. Also everyone needs to understand point creep. They do not tell you your odds this year, rather last year. What is not to say that more people put in for said unit and the odds go down the year you put in. After the draw report comes out for the previous draw, compare your points with actual results and I am sure it will all make sense. those who say they were " guaranteed" a tag should post their unit they applied for and how many points they had to solve their not being drawn. Screen shot of bonus points is always a plus!

BC, you are correct. I applied for 27 late bull with 7bp and was not drawn. According to last year's draw report i should have got drawn this year. Things do change year to year with more/less tags allotted for each hunt and how many people applied with x amount of BP's. I am not b1tching and moaning about it or anything. I understand how the draw works pretty well and the hunters trailhead that i recommended helped with that, jhedg. I think if everyone understood it a little better there would be a lot less to discuss on here. I do however hate the fact that with 18bp for antelope i still have around only 1-3% chance of drawing a good rifle tag. The nevada system of squared bonus points seems really good to me. Every year, your chances of getting drawn go up exponentially. Unless you have enough points to make the bonus pass for a hunt (or very near the number) BP's really do not do you much good. The difference in having 0BP and 15BP could mean you only have fraction of one percent better chance of getting drawn. Sometimes anomalies do occur though, like not being drawn for a hunt you applied for that had left over tags. I've seen that happen. My friend and i both put in for archery javelina. I was drawn, he was not. He did purchase a left over for the exact hunt he applied for 1st choice.

I don't undertand this whole "square the points" deal. So it makes your points actually worth something? Instead of more lottery based? Sounds nice but as soon as I get drawn and go back to 2 points (one loyalty one hunter Ed) I'm going to wish it was the lottery system! Just asking because I don't understand! With the squared system it would seem like you HAVE to wait a long time with no chance of getting "lucky" like the lottery system! Trust me I have alot of bps, I have never been drawn for antelope either but I like that every year I stand a chance!

Was he a NR? Or are you sure there wasn't a mistake on your end? Put in for the wrong hunt?

squared BP is exactly what it sounds like. If you had 5 years of applying, you would have 25 "chances" of getting drawn more or less. The majority of tags would go to people with a good amount of BP's, just how it should be. There is still a chance of being drawn with 0-2 bp, just not nearly as good.

Jhedg, there are anomalies that nobody can explain. No system is perfect and there will be flaws and mistakes made by the draw system. I'm not going to try to explain anything else on this thread. We are not the ones that "screwed" your buddy out of a tag

I never was complaining about my buddy, he is not even my buddy he is just some one I know at the range, my question was to get some added info to help better understand the system. I am not pissed I have actually been drawn my 1 choice 2 time out of the last 4 yrs, so I don't know what that BU!!shoot comment was about. This site is great for getting info, does not sound like you have the patients or ability to be able to explain the system any better then I already know. Someone on this post says "every situation can be explained", you say "Anomalies that no one can explain" ok what is it? I had a boss tell me years ago " What does the data tell you" Well the data tells me with all the people every year questioning everything the system is flawed, I have hunted across this nation for the last 35yrs never not understanding any system in any state that I have hunted, but this is crazy. I would say over 50% or better of the people I talk to have no clue on how to figure out this draw system. Now maybe I am associating with a bunch of half wits, but I don't think so. So if there is only 10-20 maybe 30% that fully, completely understand it that leaves over 70% that don't. Well let me tell you why that is a issue. MONEY!!!! the less people understand about something the less motivated they are to use it. Some will say well I will just take my bonus pt this year. That is bad!! That means no revenue for Game And Fish, that means no revenue for our cities to keep our economy running. The ability to share the info with the younger generation to keep them enthused. The ability to draw NR to come to the state to hunt to put money in to our economy. All I know someone that gets drawn for Elk 7yrs in a row and someone does not get drawn for years in areas with good tag numbers, and someone who puts in for 36a does not get drawn and his hunt comes out on the leftovers is a little past "Anomalies" like I said I got picked 2 out of the last 4 yrs for my first choice so I am happy. I still don't understand!!!

This comes up every year. G&F is aware of it but cant fix it. If you have a bonus point then your first draw is the bonus point round. There are a limited number of permits allowed in the bonus point round. Your first choice could be not available so you get your second choice even though there are still first choice permits left over. It is because you got drawn in the bonus point round. It is clear as mud.

Another thing that can happen is you hand wrote the permit numbers on your application and the person typing it in to the computer miss read or couldnt read what you wrote. That is the advantage of the computer application, less chance of human error.

Another thing is that you the applicant forgot what you put in for and are in error.

Another thing that happens is the person saying that "I always get drawn for Early Bull Unit 1 5th choice" or any other similar statement is as you put it FOS.

Another thing is there are most likely many many other things that people do to screw up that I am not aware of.

IF he truly didn't get drawn for his tag and there were left overs there is a good chance he simply wrote down the wrong hunt number and thinks he applied for the hunt with leftover tags. It happens year after year, people are convinced they applied for a certain hunt and when they look back at receipts they screwed up and put the wrong hunt number. And there is a chance your buddy at the range just doesn't know what he is talking about. I suppose there is a small chance the draw system just screwed up but I highly doubt it. If I were him I'd be happy to not have burned my bonus points during the draw and got the leftover tag, got to hunt the hunt I wanted and still kept my points for next year! Win win situation.
