DesertBull Report post Posted May 22, 2015 Go to Walmart or another big box or even better a pawn shop. $200-$500 Get a Savage long action (110,116, etc not Axis or Edge) or a Remington 700 For the Savage you can Spin off the barrel. Remington, probably best to have a smith take off the barrel unless you have the tools. If you bought new, sell unfired barrel and lug nut for $75-100 and stock for $25-50 Go to Shilen or McGowen website and order a Savage prefit barrel and barrel nut and recoil lug in what ever twist, length, contour you want. If you have a remington action, buy the "Remage" barrel and barrel nut. $300-450. Spin on new barrel (it is easy, if my non-mechanical self can do it, anyone can) Go-no gage and barrel wrench - $60-80 you can resell the gage and wrench and get most of your money back. There are easy techniques to set the head space where you will get maximum life out of brass and very little brass trimming required. Get a nice stock - HS precision, Bell and Carlson, Manners, McMillian etc $250-800 Price varies widely, but the HS stocks are nice for $300-ish. You can often get them on Ebay used. Paint it or get it coated you can't tell the difference between used and new. You have a solid action with a custom barrel and upgraded stock for under $1000 with a little bit of work. 7Mags can burn through barrels relatively fast but with this set up you can change out the burnt barrel in less than an hour. I bought a 700 and sent it off to get blue-printed, re-barreled with a Brux SS, HS stock - skim bedded...the whole 9 yards. Cost me $1200 plus shipping and I bought the action. It shoots great but not any better than my garage built Savage for less than $1000
