daryl_s Report post Posted May 14, 2007 My dad just had a rifle rebarreled for long range coues hunting. It is a 25 Van Horn Express. He is looking at the Leupold VX II 6-18x40, VX III 6.5-20x50, and the Burris Black Diamond 6-24x50 scopes. Do any of you have experience with any of these scopes and if so what would you recommend?? Thanks.
azhuntnut Report post Posted May 14, 2007 I personally own three of the Burris fullfield scopes, and would not recommend them due to black particles of something showing up in all three scopes. I sent one back and they sent out a new one. After a few shots, the same thing happened. Nikon is coming out with a new scope this year that will have a larger eye objective on the front of the scope in order to let in more light. I am going to pick up one in the 6.5-20 with the BDC reticle when they hit the shelves. Plus you can't beat the 25 year no fault warranty. David
Hunterdan Report post Posted May 14, 2007 I have had the VX III 6.5-20x50 on my Coues rifle for a few years and have been very happy with it. Lots of Light and very clear.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted May 14, 2007 Personally, i think that 6.5-20 is to big of a scope. you never know when you are gonna jump a coues deer at 50 yards. ever looked at something at 50 yards at 6.5x magnifcation?! no way you can pick out a place behind the shoulder to shoot it! thats my feeling. i had a 6.5-20x50 on my 30-06... it was on there for about 2 hours, then i took it off. i never even shot the gun with it on. i prefer a 4.5-14x40 or

The benefit of being able to tuck the cross-hairs behind a deer shoulder at 300+ yards far out weigh the risk of having to take a quick shot in close range. In my opinion I would go with that VX III

I shot my deer this year right at 75 yards and I had the scope cranked up to 10x and did not have to crank it back down. Was able to see the full body of the deer quite clearly and I made an ethical shot. I also have a Burris Fullfield II and I would recomend staying away from the burris. They make some good stuff and the black diamond is there higher grade but it is not quite as good as the leupolds or the zeiss.
TAM Report post Posted May 14, 2007 I know you weren't asking about the Ziess Conquest scopes but I'd give them the nod over the Leupoulds, and there pricing is similar. If you just want to compare the Leupould and the Burris, then Leupould will win that race all day long.
BASS Report post Posted May 14, 2007 zeiss conquest 6.5-20x50 *drool* That scope is what I have planned for my rifle build later this year.
Hooked_on_Coues Report post Posted May 14, 2007 Get the Leupold VX III with target turrets and a standard reticle. When you have shot the gun through a chrony you can send the info to the custom shop and they will make you a laser etched turret. Set and shoot. Pretty neat setup.
