111 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I don't have a .260 or know anything about them. What I consider the best rifle to cover all your options would be a 7mm. I consider the 7mm one of the best flat shooting high power rifles there is. It's good for coyotes with a 55 grain bullet or elk with a 160 grain bullet. azcouesandelk Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I have a .300 win. mag. and that is an amazingly flat shooting bullet, but the 7 mm is also a great bullet. In my opinion it is just each persons preferences.
300 wsm Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I dont own a 260, but it is a nice round. It is a .308 necked down to a .260 caliber, like the 243 is. I have shot my friends many times and love it. It is a good deer cartridge. We have it loaded with 120 gr. hornadys.
couesstalker Report post Posted August 9, 2004 Hey craig(AKA 300WSM), Have you guys shot that .260 thru a chrony? If so what kind of numbers is it producing? thanks for the info---COUESSTALKER
300 wsm Report post Posted August 9, 2004 We were getting right around 3000 fps with the 120 gr. hornadys.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 11, 2004 I have a 260 in the Remington laminated stainless mountain rifle. It's light and handles well, and is actually good looking for a stainless and laminated stocked rifle. I have a load for the 129 grain Hornady SST that is around 2800 fps. I figure it has the energy(retains 1200 ft-lbs) and velocity (maintains 2000 fps) for good bullet performance out to 400 yards. Trajectory is slightly less than the 270 winchester. While the 7mag and 300's may be flatter, the 260 has noticebly less recoil and is more pleasurable to shoot. I used the 260 on a Utah antelope hunt a few years ago to take a buck at 385 yards. Had good bullet performance and the recoil was not great enough to lose the sight picture. Also took it coues hunting one year, but didn't pop a cap. It's a great cartridge, but not the optimum for long distance game shooting,IMO. For coues and antelope hunting, and at the expense of some recoil, I'd consider the 25-06, 257 Weatherby, 270 Weatherby, and 270 WSM. Doug/Red Rabbit
