ultramag Report post Posted May 9, 2007 I have never been down south to hunt coues. The more info that I get makes me think that it is not safe to go down there. Is there any truth to all of this? Is it as bad as it seems? I have not made a selection on which unit yet. Just looking for some feedback from the experienced hunters that go down there. azcouesandelk Report post Posted May 9, 2007 There definately is a problem with illegal immigration and drug smuggling but in most cases they will not bother you. I have seen hundreds of illegals and several drug smugglers and I have never had a problem. They will come into a camp looking for water. There is always the possibility of getting in the way of a drug smuggler and having a problem but it is not to common. This last season I spent over 30 days down there and never had a problem and I have spent alot of time down south on previous deer seasons and quail hunting. It would freak me out to be asleep and wake up to someone diggin through my stuff. Did that happen at all?

azcouesandelk Report post Posted May 9, 2007 [Younghunter did you camp out? It would freak me out to be asleep and wake up to someone diggin through my stuff. Did that happen at all? Yeah I did camp out and it has happend to me once. I woke up to take a leak and saw several illegals filling there water jugs with a 5 gallon jug of water that I had on my table. If you keep your stuff hidden you should not have any problems with them hanging around your camp. Also I would recomend looking for a campground to stay in. That is what I did this last season and it made it alot less stressful.
Lance Report post Posted May 9, 2007 It is sooo unsafe! Stay out of my spot, I meen that border country Actually, the fact that you carry an "Ultramag" should keep you safe! I just fire my 7mm RUM off early in the morning when everything is still, and it pritty much clears the unit of illegal activity! Certain areas have alot of traffic. Some areas don't have any. Don't put your tent or blind next to a 3 foot wide trail in a big saddle and thats half the battle! I do carry a side arm along with that rifle, but that is more of just a comfort for my mind sort of thing. I am only 6'4" 250# so you can see why I need the extra comfort Lance

azpackhorse Report post Posted May 9, 2007 I spend a gob of time down south, my wife absolutely hates that I insist on going down there, a lot of times by myself. I absoluyelt WILL NOT let some drug smuggling pieces of s--t dictate what I do in my country, prolly not the smartest attitude but it's the one I have. I have had a couple of ........interesting experiences down there but all has turned out well. If you spend enough time down there you will see some bad stuff, keep your wits about you, be prepared, SSS, and enjoy OUR country!
DesertBull Report post Posted May 9, 2007 How can you enjoy it with all of the trash? It's a disgrace. It seems like you are hunting at the city dump.

matthewp45 Report post Posted May 9, 2007 Although it can be dangerous last year hunting in 36 C about 6 miles from the border, we were glassing and found an illegal and I'll be damned if he did not jump a real nice 85" buck and send it our way. My friend drilled him and we were done opening morning. Thanks again Juan Paco
Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 9, 2007 Have had tags every other year in 36C and have not had a problem yet at camp or in the field. Have glassed illegals running across the flats below. Still, I am more concerned about the truck left behind at the trailhead than about meeting someone up in the Babos. Did have some illegals walk through camp one night last quail season in 35A, but I was camped next to a north-south dirt road. RR
stanley Report post Posted May 9, 2007 Similar to others, I have not had any problems there. Four or five years hunting 36A & C. Deer & javelina seasons, and I've never had a 'run-in'. I usually camp in an area where there are other camps in close proximity if possible, but other than that I just kind of keep an eye on stuff & keep things locked-up. Seen a few illegals from a distance in the flats, but they're usually truckin south -> north within a few miles of the highway (usually, not always... ). I've seen more illegals during the ranch clean-ups for some reason. Speaking of trash, that's what bothers me a bit more. Lots of it piles-up quickly in the obvious spots. S.
