We took off Thursday morning heading for Alpine to my uncle's cabin he has up there for my dad's and I turkey hunt. My uncle (I guess my ex-uncle) and my dad use to always hunt together for everything; and I was lucky enough to tag along on most of their hunts. But when my aunt and him got divorced we only talked a couple times a year. This was our first hunt together in something like eight years. He brought along one of his workers, and the four of us met up in Globe for lunch/dinner. When we got up there, it was already dark so the guns were checked, clothes layed out and then we went out for some night time scouting. We checked a few canyons with the old "oooh-ahhh!" shock gobble, but couldn't get anything to talk to us. So about twelve o'clock we headed back to the cabin. Missedagain had called on the way up there, and told us to get up before the sun came up to so we could get out there about an hour before the sun came up. But after talking most of the night about past hunts, and the antics we all had been through together we all slept in till six thirty the next morning. With the sun up we walked out the front door and were greeted by a small herd of elk only a couple hundred yards away in a near by medow. We loaded up in our truck and started towards big lake. Right away a turkey crossed the road in front of us, followed closly by a cow elk. Any calling we tried was fruitile and didn't return any results. We loaded back up in the truck, and continued on. At about seven fifteen the coffee was kicking in, and a rest stop was going to be needed very soon, we turned down the wrong road but didn't realize it until it was too late, and had to continue on to find a turn around. When we stopped we noticed a small flock walking across the medow approaching a small knoll near where we had parked. My uncles worker and I headed up the knoll hoping to catch them and get a shot before they dissapeared into the thick woods. When we got to the top I looked around and saw the tom looking straight at us from about twenty yards away. I imediatly took a knee, and Seth, sat behind a small grove of trees. When the bird walked out of sight I moved into the trees too directly in front of Seth. He tried to call with a diaphram, but what came out had us both laughing. We asked if I knew how to use one, I said I did, and took another one from him. When I tried to do a cluck it began perfect but then the latex ripped ending it with a loud "buh" To our amazment the tom came walking right back into our only open shooting lane again. I shot and sent him to the ground. We both got up and began heading towards the flopping bird to retrieve it before it got up and started the death run never to be seen again. When we got closer it got up, and with one flap was airborn. A second shot put him back down again, that time for good. When we got to the downed bird we just looked at eachother and agreed that we must never talk about that calling session ever again, and that it must die along with the bird. With one bird down, and only one to go my dad was kind enough to allow us all to go to new mexico and hunt over there, so we all could hunt, and not just him. That trip to get tags is a whole 'nother story filled with near head on collisions, over priced gas, rude store owners, green chillie burros that should never have been eaten, and a truck accident that we happened upon that we all just knew would have a body in it. We didn't have any luck in New Mexico, or fishing for that matter, but it had to have been one of the most fun hunting trips we had all been on.

The first sight we saw coming around a corner

No deaths, but a bunch of beer cans hidden in a sack only a few yards away.

Bass, congratulation on a nice looking bird and a good story to share with us. I think I might know something about the pickup. I hear if you are lucky enough to find a roost near a road you can run your truck into their tree and flush them out. I believe the cracked windshield probably came from the bird when it fell. I bet that hunter was close on their tails when you arrived on the scene. I condem this type of hunting and it should be reported.

I'll tell you what, just because I'm a nice guy, and I like the way you talk. PM me your adress and I'll let you have this one for a steal at $20. deal.gif

BTW I love that beanie. It's great, not too thick but not too thin, just right for here in Arizona. Over the weekend it was 26 degrees one morning, but I was nice and warm, and lookin' good with it on. B) Thanks again. :D
