Manamal Report post Posted August 11, 2004 Wow, what a cool story TREESTANDMAN. You are really lucky to see a lion that close or at all for that matter. Well I guess you're also lucky he didn't pounce too!!! Sounds like you've found yourself a good spot. Good enough to keep a lion around unless he looked like he was starving. az4life Report post Posted August 12, 2004 (edited) Great story! I know how you feel. I have posted before about this but in 2001, I was stalked by a big mean lion. Growling and hissing as he came in at me from 45 yards to about 10 feet. I too was unarmed (nevemore) and I DID see my life flash before my eyes. I cannot imagine a worse way to die except possibly by fire. I was scouting for elk near west clear creek wilderness out of camp verde in unit 6. I was fortunate to stop him and turn him away in the last 10 feet with the help of a Prayer and a tree root I broke off a nearby dead tree. Still gives me chills! Everyone asked if I cr@pped my shorts, but just the opposite happened. I was stopped up for 2 days afterwards! I still have the lifesaving branch in my back yard and one vivid memory to go with it. Hope you get him! Edited January 1, 1970 by az4life
111 Report post Posted August 12, 2004 My dad has a lion tag to fill anytime during the rest of 2004 with hounds. This guide says any fresh track within a couple days and his dogs will track it right down. Back in March this guide and a hunter took a big tom west of Snow Bowl by the peaks. Found some nice size lion tracks in unit 7 coming to a tank but It's hard to get the guide up here with his hounds quickly. Let me know an area where you have a big lion or a lot in an area and that you wouldn't mind having one taken out. We'll easily get one this fall when the snow falls but nows your chance to save a few of your deer, because I believe this guide will continue hunting the lions with other hunters to get there population down. TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted August 12, 2004 Before I even consider going out for lions w/ hounds I betting get into better shape. I went out w/ hounds once before and about killed myself from exaustion. And that was back when I was in better shape. Lion hunters w/ hounds have all my respect. Mattule Report post Posted August 13, 2004 (edited) Like I always tell my hunting partner " you want to see a huge lion or bear, show up with either no gun or no tag, they will come out of the wood works". TIP this works well with Coues, go scout your unit, the big ones will be standing next to the road practically waving at you then come opening morning they travel over to the unit that opens the following weekend. gnoto Report post Posted August 13, 2004 get a wesson model 15. if your going to get a .357 used for cheap.. Multiple barrel opotions and you can drive nails. Besides when its about self defense screw the single action. I love my Ruger .41 Blackhawk but if its about how fast I can defend my self against a predator
