top soil

Recommended Posts

Most rock places carry it. It is usually a mix of sand, call and ask as they have different mixtures but most of the soil in the valley is just fine for growing stuff and in the long run it may be easier to till up the soil and then add in ammendents depending on what veggies you are planning to grow.

Thanks, doing a raised garden so no tilling. I'm going to check the rock places but thought I'd ask here first as I'd prefer to give business to a forum member if possible.

Even with raised beds it is best to double dig. At least bust up the ground under your raised beds to help drainage and deep roots penetrate. Craigslist is a good source for free soil and manure. If you are looking for easy and ready to plant try sandy loam from Pioneer Rock. They will fill your truck bed or deliver.

I purchased some sandy loam from Pioneer Rock on Guadalupe between Gilbert and Cooper when I did my raised beds a few years back. I mixed in 20% compost. In the bed that I wasn't going to use right away, I also mixed in a couple bags of steer manure (you don't want to do that if you're planting seeds right away). The whole transaction was easy, I just pulled my truck up to the pile and they filled the back up.

Call my cousin Nick at Rock N Rollin Rock Sales if you can't find something more local. He's in Peoria.
