Need Tacoma Help !

Recommended Posts

I finally picked up a loaded 2010 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 to replace my 2000 prerunner. I usually like doing all my own maintenance and small repair jobs when possible, but with a new baby I have absolutely no time to spend on my truck.

I have an annoying squealing sound coming from the drivetrain and I can't pinpoint the noise. So far I ruled out the front brakes which I thought it was and I've greased all my u-joints. I also replaced the front diff and transfer case gear oil since I was unsure when it was done last. I also ruled out the accessory belts since the noise doesn't change with rpm. I still think the problem is a u-joint or carrier bearing. I can only drive around a parking lot with my head stuck out the door for so long.

I also hate to just throw parts at it trying to solve the problem.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the East Valley to take my truck to. I do not want to take it to the stealership.

Imo small repair shops will screw you over much more than the dealership. I always received great service at earnhardt toyota when i had my tacoma. Now i have an FJ

I learned a lot from tacomaworld. There is not a single problem that you will have on your tacoma that has not already been discussed there

Tacoma world is a good site and a good source but it doesn't diagnose your problem. Just like this site, it doesn't give you GPS to a record buck. Good resource but proper diag saves you money and time in the long run. Are you getting any vibration? If so, steering wheel or in your seat? When it happens if you throw it in neutral does it go away? Worse on turns, U-turns, straight freeway, speed it happens? All the questions an advisor needs to ask but they don't. Pisses off techs more than anything to have half the info.

I'd look at the carrier bearing as well. I'll be replacing mine as soon as the semester is over and I have time. Hefner's in Mesa has always treated me well. My dad uses Auto Vaun's but he's more expensive.

I agree, tacomaworld is s great resource. What I don't have is time. There is no vibration and the noise is consistent with driveshaft speed, even in neutral. My next troubleshooting step would be to put the rears on jacks, put it in neutral and spin the driveshaft/wheels. If needed have someone run it in gear. (Sketchy). The problem again is time. That is why I'm ready to throw in the towel and just take it in.

In the same way guys are posting hoping to be given that honey hole I was hoping we had a Toyota master tech on here who would offer to bring my truck into the dealer after hours. Lol

Thanks for the help

Looks like there is a tsb out for 2010 carrier bearing mounts. Even if the truck is out of warranty some places will still fix it under the tsb guidelines.
