capoeirajosh Report post Posted April 13, 2015 Calling can be very effective on the later hunts, they may not respond as they come in but if you got the gobbler that is running a flock he will come in if your calling his tune! Lots of folks will over look the later hunt, but it can be really good imo This is my favorite time to turkey hunt the hens are on eggs the bigger birds are still looking for love and there are a lot less hunters out in the field. I call in a lot more birds and they tend to be the older bigger toms. Oh, man! You guys are getting me super pumped!! Hahaha! Come on May 8th!

naturegirl Report post Posted April 14, 2015 I've had the late hunt many times and they have always still been calling (just less than earlier in the hunt). I've noticed turkeys seem to stay in the same general area (this area is pretty large though) so if you've seen them once, it's a good place to start. I really like ridges. Turkeys walk them and then just glide right off them at the first sign of trouble. I also like meadows and it is because you can actually see the birds moving around the meadow. It also seems they regularly come to water. different years I'll go back to the same general areas I've seen turkeys and call before sunup. The majority of the time I'll get a Tom to gobble.
.270 Report post Posted April 14, 2015 years back, probably about 20, the spring hunt started the first or second weekend of april. and went to the end of the month. turkeys strutting every where. it was a wonderful thing. i useta hunt turkeys horseback a lot. unload at the first snowbank and ride around and into the country you couldn't get to yet. it was a gobble fest. really a good time. but the forest circus complained that the turkey hunters were rutting up the roads because they were wet, so the azgfd in their infinite wisdom moved the season back a month. right now the turkeys are going nuts at our place. by the time the season starts there won't be much activity. most of the hens will have been covered and nesting in a couple more weeks. best bet with the season the way it is now is to get way back and listen for gobbles in the early morning and try to make it work out. good luck. Lark.
kimberx2 Report post Posted April 14, 2015 I don't think it is better later. The week before the youth hunt is amazing, the youth hunt weekend is great. The early hunt is usually good. The second hunt is OK. By the time the archery OTC hunt opens I think it is very slow. The birds become quiet after they fly down from their roosts. They are also very call shy, after hundreds of hunters drive through and stop and call every 100 yds.

mattys281 Report post Posted April 19, 2015 I'll be using that weekend to start the trail cams up and then spend some time in my deer tree. During the last couple of august hunts I've literally had turkeys roll by me every single day, but i've never shot one because i dont want to give up a day of deer hunting dealing with a dead turkey. Then after i inevitably shoot my deer i haul butt home afterwards, with the unfilled turkey tag in my pocket. Maybe if theyre in there in may and deer isnt on the menu i'll finally stick one to the ground.
