elk calling

Recommended Posts

Some friends of mine got drawn for a archery bull. I know from years past that you can not predict what kind of rut you will get and more importantly the weather. What have been some of the experiences that you have found for calling in those bulls. My experience has been if its good its good and if its not that leave your calls at camp cause they won't work anyway. And the big herd bulls forget it you will not make him leave his cows.

What has been your results for calling bulls?

I've never called one in and shot it cause I hunt in the Nov archery hunt but I do play with them anyways during rut. Never leave your call in camp. You just never know when it will work. I have had some success wih the new Hoochie Mama. It's easy to use and it realy calls them in. I wish I could show a picture of one I vedioed this last season but don't know how to put it on here. Good luck with your hunt. hoochie mamaaaaaaaaaa!

I use calls mainly for locating elk, and then try to get in front of the herd as they move. Herd bulls are hard to call away from the cows, so I just get in front of the herd and try to get a shot as they move past.

There is a TON of different tactics and calls that can be effective for calling in bulls. I think the most imprtant thing to remember is to match what the Elk are doing on that particular day. If they are very vocal, then I won't hold back.......If they are fairly quiet, then I rarely make a sound. Coues Krazy has a great tactic and one that I use almost all the time. The Elk are "usually" out there letting you know exactly where they are, and "usually" where they are headed, just by listnening to them! Use that to your advantage, don't let them know you are there, and get ahead of them! This is the reason why some guys don't wear "hiking" boots while Elk hunting.......they wear "running" shoes! You can e-mail me what you want to post, and I can get it up here for you.

I also have to give a big +1 to the hoochie mamma. B) That is all I use anymore it seems like. The termanator is also a really good call to use, but more as a locator, or as a last ditch effort IMO. Last year on the archery hunts I got a guy on bulls two days in a row by using the hoochie mamma to cover up our walking. I gave him one, and I took one. I told him to only sqeeze when I sqeezed and the two "cows" talking back and forth worked awsome! The only problem was that he didn't tell me he had a cow tag.

I sure appreciate your offer. I'm as stupid as they come about working anything with wires. I haven't figured how to get them on my computer. I don't have digital video. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again!

I've had good luck callin in satellite bulls with the hooch, not so much with herd bulls, but makes cows more calm while you're stalkin them as well

Hoochie mama has worked great for me, and so easy to use.

same for me. Just not the big boys. If I could only find a 340 class satelite bull.

Can always tell when someones got a Hoochie. eeea eeea eeea eeea ;)

Realy, for the beginner or someone that doesn't care to much about the size of bull. 1- Find where the bulls are talking. 2- Find the two bulls that are calling the closest or realy close to eachother. 3- Ignore all other elk and get close to the two bulls. One of them is likely an agressive satellite bull and will come to your calls easer than most.

WARNING! - Satellite bulls in the state of AZ are not always small and may humble your soul

Good luck!
