muledeerarea33? Report post Posted April 28, 2007 just wondering what the min legal caliber for deer hunting is? how about the max?
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 28, 2007 i believe (not sure so dont quote me) that the minimum is any .22 centerfire or larger. to me that means 22-250 in perfect condtions. got a buddy whos wife killed a 116 4/8 brusier with a 22-250 shot to the neck. personally, i wouldnt hunt with anything less than a 243. would prefer or 25-06, 270 or...my personal chouce 270wsm! dads 7RUM can reach out there and drop the hammer also! biggest ive seen anyone carry is a 300 RUM.... dang near seperated that buck from the neck/shoulder joint in two! deer didnt go far though! (like 6 inches!)
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted April 28, 2007 thanks for the info casey. got a friend who wants to use a .223 this year. I always thought the min was .243 6mm guess I was wrong
TwoGuns Report post Posted April 29, 2007 my brother shot many deer through the years with his 22-250 with terrific success. He is a good shot though.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 29, 2007 i do believe a .223 is legal, but marginal in my opnion. i like having room for error or any shot oppurtunity that is less than stellar.
BASS Report post Posted April 29, 2007 Casey, how do you like your .270wsm for Coues? I've really been thinking about one of those in a synthetic stock, and a turret scope for deer. But everyone I talk to says that these short mags are just a passing fad. I've been lugging around a 7mm around and that beast gets heavy quick with the crappy sling it has on it. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 29, 2007 140 accubond movin at 3150 FPS sure puts the hammer down on em! i can push the accubond to nearly 3300, but shows pressure signs with excellant accuracy so i backed it down. puts the hurtin on em and gets em killed! Red Rabbit Report post Posted April 29, 2007 Bass, I feel that the 270 and 300 WSM are here for awhile. The 7WSM, SAUMs and WSSMs may pass away soon. If you reload, have no worries. The 270 WSM is one of the better coues cartridges. It'll give you just over 100 yards more range than the 270 Win due to the WSM's 200-250 fps MV advantage with equal bullets. Don't foget about the 257 WBY. I wish Winchester came out with a 25 WSM, but you could always have one made. RR
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 29, 2007 doug is correct, that 257 wby is a dang good claiber. BUT YOU HAVE TO RELOAD or you will spend an arm and a leg on ammo!
Kilimanjaro Report post Posted April 29, 2007 I've killed a ton of deer with .22 cal. rifles.. my very first deer was taken with a .222 Rem. I've also used 22-250, .223, and .220 Swift calibers to take deer sized game such as a TX mule deer, and a blackbuck antelope. All with good results.. I also took my first and only coues WT here in AZ with a .223 WSSM. And taken a pronghorn buck with the same rifle at over 300 yards.. 22 cal guns will work great!! firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 29, 2007 scott, how far were those shots? were any of them head shots?
Kilimanjaro Report post Posted April 29, 2007 yeah, some of them were.. I culled a TON of WT does out here with a 22-250.. head shots all the way.. kept the carcass clean.. we were shooting upwards of 60 deer per day and we were having to clean all of them.. less messy that way.. plus it was just fun to see who could call their shots.. a WT doe's head is a mighty small target at 200 yards!! But the BB was taken at about 150 thru the shoulder, the muley was shot thru the neck at about 200, the coues at 275 with a shoulder shot, and that pronghorn was a tidge over 300.. also shoulder shot.. Diamondbackaz Report post Posted April 29, 2007 I retired my model 7 243 after 4 deer kills; two dropped dead in their tracks, but they were hit in the neck. The other two were heart lung shots and they ran between 70 to a 100 yards before dropping. Didn't have that problem with my 06. I now use a 270 as my carry gun. I looked at the 270 WSM but decided against it because of only 2 shots fit in the magazine.
