unit 23 camping

Recommended Posts

I don't know this unit very well unfortunately but I'm looking to change that. Taking the family camping. 2 tents 8 people adults and children. Would like something near water if possible. I know it's a lot to ask but if you have any suggestions please help.

Canyon creek has some spots that you have very close access .... If you want to camp and then head out for a short drive to scout and search 23, camping along Christopher creek is a good option as well. just all depends on what you are looking for.

A favorite of mine is Circle Ranch trail head, at Reynolds creek. If your familiar with the workman's creek area, it is about a mile up the road. So at the risk of opening up one of my favorite destination spots to the whole wide world, this is why I like it.

We use this spot for deer and turkey base camp. It says "trail head" but the circle drive goes in deep enough and has a few different areas to spread apart from other people there. I took my sister and her family (they were pretty green for camping) here. It's got an outhouse, so that was a plus. Plenty of shade and an open meadow for the kids (its across the fence). There are three hiking trails close by (two from camp). One is short, about a 1/4 mile down to Reynolds creek that is always flowing. it is not an "established" camp ground, but does have fire pits in the ground. On deer last year, we had coyotes come through camp in the middle of the night to look for scraps.

other nearby features... Workmans creek is fun. There's indian ruins on the cliff face just above the water gauge station. If you take the road to the top of Aztec peak, the ranger will normally let you look out from his tower. Close to the tower, one of the previous rangers made a "flinstone bluff" (he took rocks and made chairs, a table and its pretty neat especially for the kids). Directly across from Circle ranch is I believe fr 410, that takes you up to an entirely different view than the fire tower provides). It s a long haul down to the head waters for Roosevelt but the fishing by the bridge is supposed to be pretty cool. There's also a tower on McFadden peak to go up and look around at too.

The big draw backs are, don't forget anything! its about a 2 hr rounder either direction to young or globe for anything. The coyotes, if people are timid. And it sits across the creek from the Tonto group site. - We had a scouting trip that didn't turn out so well with the 2 dozen or so 20 yr olds out that apparently didn't need to sleep at all that weekend.

Tents. I camped south of workman creek and it wasn't bad but had to drive to the creek to access water. Kinda hoping for something in a little cooler weather maybe.

not cooler but Haigler creek is pretty much right on the creek. plenty of shade and the kids can run the creek.

can be crowded at times. there are restrooms and spaces for trailers and or tents/ fire pits and grill and picnic tables. about 6 or 7 spots close to the creek and about 10 or so spots in the overflow a stones throw away. it is what it is public camping vs primitive camping.

I was up on Friday to scout for turkey. Everything south of young was open. Kinda made me sad actually....I was just planning a day trip. Seeing how nice it was made me wish I brang a bed roll and snacks to stay over

No I haven't been up there. Other than for a day hunt. Just wanted a good place with some water access for the family to enjoy. If I'm lucky I'll sneak away for a bit of glassing.

I really like camping just a little way up the Cherry Creek road. From there, you get the amazing sunset over the lake, you're not far from the cliff dwellings in the Anchas, A-cross road is close by, Black Mesa has some great drives and hikes.
