Zeke-BE Report post Posted March 29, 2015 Well it's a no go for elk for me so all my efforts will be in Deer this year. I wanted to try something new, I always hunt down in the 36s and occasionally 37b and 24b for archery closer to home. But I was wondering about north 24a on the traffic of hunters. I was just up there with the Boy Scouts, and the same time Glassing this weekend. I was also trying to convince the Boy Scouts to go shed hunting for me he he!! Good looking country, closer to home for scouting, but I just don't want to scout in the area where everybody and there dog will be at if I get drawn for this area. Any advice to avoid the heavy crowds I would appreciate it.
jonesface Report post Posted March 29, 2015 Pick any unit, hike an hour and you will get rid of 90% of hunters. If I find hunters after I hiked an hour I will go a ridge or two more but this rarely happens.
LovinthehuntAz Report post Posted March 30, 2015 Just hope none of the locals get drawn we pound it out pretty good!!
JLW Report post Posted March 30, 2015 I've bow hunted it in dec/jan and seen a few monsters but the areas that get pounded during rife are not hunted near as much during late bow season. azgfd web page can point you in the right direction to start your scouting. they usually tell you which areas that are most popular but also give pretty good starting points. I have been around 7 mile wash and seen no one and I have been there and seen a lot of people. I'm sure rifle season is crazy like anywhere else. Zeke-BE Report post Posted March 31, 2015 Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking 7 mile wash and down to the salt river. I usually like the 36 units, and I was going to put in achery kiabab hunt but wife is expecting our 4 th child in June and realistically I don't think I can pull away to scout the BAB this year. So a closer drive sounds good. I' hunt the roads while I'm going to my spots and then hike out. But jonesface it's hard to find an area to hike a mile or two and not come across another road. But I strive to look for areas that are 1-3 square miles with no roads and hunt it. Usually turns out good, but I've been in those area were the other 5% hunter ( probably CWT members) were thinking the same thing and now your fighting a 2 square miles with 4 hunters. Crazy but it happens!!!
Norteno Report post Posted March 31, 2015 There are hardly any Muleys left in 24a. They all crossed into 24b.

I'd probably start off hwy 188.... you can access that just past Guyos.(great place to stop for a bite to eat) off Bixby road. years ago we quail hunted back in there. lots of washes and rolling hills. take 1 of the roads up high and glass back down in the washes. azruger Report post Posted April 23, 2015 24A is a great unit. Hunted it all my life. Mulies and coues. Great for bear also. And some monster bulls too. Hunt the Jan. Rut. You will find some great mule deer and coues, glass glass glass.
azruger Report post Posted April 29, 2015 You don't need to hunt as far out of town as 7 mile. Its a great place, but I hunt way closer to town and find bucks every year in 24a. Great bucks, both coues and mule deer. Private message me abd I will point you in the right direction. 7 mile is great for bear...
