Here is some info on the vaccine from the website of the company that makes it. I am thinking about getting it for my dog.

"This rattlesnake vaccine was developed to protect against Western Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. It is most effective against this snake's venom.

Venom from many other snakes found throughout the United States is similar to the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Because of these similarities, this vaccine also provides protection against the venoms of the Western Rattlesnake (including the Prairie, Great Basin, Northern and Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes), Sidewinder, Timber Rattlesnake, Massasauga and the Copperhead. This vaccine provides partial protection against the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

This vaccine does not provide protection against the Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth), Mojave Rattlesnake or Coral Snakes. Red Rock Biologics is developing a variety of vaccines to provide the best protection against poisonous snakes for dogs in each part of the country. "

Here is the link: http://www.redrockbiologics.com/FAQ.html

That's some great info, thanks for the follow up.

I am with Dog man on this one. we have had a few dogs bit by snakes. I have never taken one tyo the vet and they have been ok. They do swell up good in the location and i would guess it could kill them. But i have never seen one of our die. They have all been Work dogs and not any of our hunting dogs.

I think a lot of it depends on how big the dog is and how much venom that got. My 35 lb dog got a bit pritty good and I'm glad we took her in.... even though we racked up a vet bill of about $1,600. :( Shes a female, and she is quit a character, and she got bit while a nast thunderstorm was rolling in and ever sence then she freaks out when she sences a storm coming.

I am with dogman too on this one. A snake bites a dog and chances are the dog will be just fine but you mite want to give the dog a couple benadryl tabs to help with the swelling...Now on the other hand if your dog gets bit by a mojave about all a guy can do is pray that its a dry bite.

I have had two dogs bit on the snout by rattlers. Both dogs necks swelled up pretty good, and they laid around for about a week. And then they were right back to normal.
