I just got word of WRITTEN regs issued by the USFWS for importing trophys from Mex. They're 4 or 5 pages, & forms to be filled out . Jay is still sorting thru the Mumbo Jumbo, But i should have them in a day or two.

GRANDE BEAR,I talked to the USFWS and to the Dept. of Agriculture and this is what I was told: the skull must be clean,horns free of blood and hair and cape must be solid frozen in order for them to be legal to cross into the U.S. And of course your deer must be tag.

 

So the answer to your question is YES.

does mexico change their rules every year? i've never hunted and probably never will. seems like a real hassle and you're pretty much powerless and at the mercy of the federalis. have a friend who has hunted there a bunch. shot some huge muleys and at least one tremendous coues. he takes a mounted head, without antlers, and screws the rack to it, stitches it up the best he can and brings it across as something he bought. said it saves him some kind of fee at the border and is a lot less hassle. might be illegal as heck now, i have no idea. but worked in the past. but it sure seems that some pretty innocent acts have caused some guys some real hearburn.

Current rules on importing trophies from mexico - You can bring back the skull+antlers and cape from your deer. The hide must be frozen solid and not thawed to ANY extent or the cape must be free of all meat with the ears, lips and nose turned and then salted heavily. If the cape is thawed any at all it must be taken to a USDA Certified taxidermy studio for quarantine. The reason for this is the potential for virus to effect our deer herds. Salting a cape breaks the virus cycle as does solid freezing. A partially thawed cape will not pass because the inspector cannot be sure the cape was ever completely frozen. Its not a problem if you get to the border and your cape is thawed but you must take it to a USDA approved taxidermy studio. There is one in the Phoenix area and a couple in the Tucson area. You cannot bring back any sheds or pickup heads. As far as the paper work goes you will need what is called a declaration form from the USFW service. The inspector will fill out a USDA form at the border. One other thing to remember, if you take any prescription medicine with you you will need to have a writen prescription from our doctor with you in order to be in posession of the medication. I have seen meat come back accross he border with no problem as long as it is for pesonal consumption only. Not sure why the rules are so tight on skins and not meat but I don't work for the government.

270 What your friend is doing is illegal and so far he's being lucky. In order to bring sheds or a mounted deer even if he declares he buy it it must be properly ispected by PROFEPA;PROFEPA will verify that you have the proper permits and paper work from SEMARNAT and also in must be checked by USFWS inspectors.

 

So if he declares he buy that head it must have a tag with all the information on it,he must proof that that deer was harvested legally and etc etc.

 

Hunting in Mexico is not a pain in the neck it will be a pain if you are there hunting illegally or doing things against the law so yes you must have the proper paper work because if not, the the federales will give that pain in the neck.

Doug McKenna and some of his staff will be at the Arizona Deer Association clinic to be held August 19th at 5:30 pm at the Mountain Preserve Center in Phoenix. Doug is the number one guy for Arizona with the USFWS. He will have a presentation and handouts clearing up any questions. In addition to Doug we will have Jay Gates, Duwane Adams and Jim White speaking on Mule Deer, Coues & Optics respectively. Many of your questions can be answered if you come to this meeting. We will raffle off guns etc.....and have a room set up for the kids to play the AZGFD fishing and hunting big screen games they had at the fairgrounds.........Hope to see you guys/gals there........Allen......
