STOMP442 Report post Posted March 16, 2015 You say you have less than half a box of ammo through this rifle? Any particular reason you took an un-proven rifle on a possible once in a lifetime hunt? I am not trying to bash you here as you were obviously successful in your hunt and good for you but how certain of that rifle and ammo combination are you? Was this rifle sighted in using the Bi-pod or simple sand bags off a bench? How many groups did you shoot and what size were they? Did you have consistent high flyers? Lots of things to consider than simply chalking the success up to the magnum cartridge which is only doing 200fps more than the standard cartridge.
yotebuster Report post Posted March 16, 2015 I think what everyone is trying to say is that it is impossible. And not like "man that's impossible" but like "newtons laws say that that is impossible". If I had to wager a guess your sight in height of 2" high at 100 maybe got bumped off to a foot or two high without you knowig and that put it a few inches low at 500? Or second idea, maybe when holding on his backline at 500 you flinched and sent the bullet a couple feet higher then planned and dropped it right in there. Either way its a dead goat and a nice shot. As my grandpa always said, "better to be lucky then good".

First of all, if you read the post it said, A BOX AND A HALF. I had approx 1 week before my hunt to do what I needed to to sight this in. I took this rifle because YES I was confident with the ammo which I have used for years and have set up rifles of my own for many years. I did have a back up rifle that was proven but own nothing that I thought would be as flat shooting at a longer distance. I shot 5 round groups times 5 at the time sighting it in with the groups 1/4" or less apart. There were no flyers. From the time I put the scope on it was hitting paper 6" high and 2 &1/4 left. Dilaed it in and continued to do what I have done for years. Every other rifle I own have been well tested and shot many times before going afield. I just didn't have time and my old .270 had been stolen which is why I bought this one. I am really sorry I posted this. Again I have no reson to lie about this. Next time I will just ask my firends personally. Guess it's my fault for not hunting with friends and going alone.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted March 16, 2015 That sucks you had a rifle stolen. Did it ever turn up? Check pawn shops/Backpage/Ebay/classifieds? If you have a serial #, post it up and we can help keep an eye out for it. Any specifics will help us watch for it. As for hunting alone, I usually do the same. No shame in hunting alone.

Hunted alone for many years as I had a friend that I used to hunt with and found out the hard way he had been poaching unknown to me. Had to go to court as I was subpeoned because I was on a tag with him 8 years before and they finally caught up with him. He was convicted too..AWESOME.. Anyway I started hunting alone because I trust myself. The rifle that was stolen has never turned up. I had checked everywhere too. Oh well.
