Antleope at 517 yards

Recommended Posts

A laser would be awesome though!

Your setup must be different than mine. I have verified drops with my .25-06 Ackley out to 1360 yards, and .300RUM out over 1500 yards.

Great antelope any way you look at it. I can only hope I draw a tag soon. I have got to be close.

In some states they are legal. VA i believe is one.

I mean a laser beam, like a storm trooper. Not a laser designator, like Crimson Trace or every bad police/sniper movie!

If a laser beam (like a storm trooper) is legal in VA, I have to put in for an eastern whitetail tag! I have to put that on my bucket list.....

Was this in Az? If so what unit?

Yes AZ. 2012..unit 18a..I didnt tell you all the part about the record booker I missed 2 times the day before at about the same yardage. Held over him a little to much. I was by myself that day. One of the gentlemen helping me the next day witnessed my failure the previous day. My range finder only went to 400 yards and I couldn't get a fix on him. He said he had been watching the buck I missed for a week and that he def. would make the book. He was a retired guide out of Safford. I will never hunt by myself again. Thanks to those 2 guys for helping me the next day fill a long awaited tag.

8" drop would be a laser. 2" high @ 100yds is like zeroing @250yds. Still at 500 yds I get a drop of 28.4" with a muzzle velocity of 3275fps. I use the Winchester app on my phone.

Regardless, the 270wsm is a gun I'd like to have.

What round are you shooting Norteno? I have never owned a .270wsm until now and this seemed ultra flat. That was my point of this thread. I do agree that this rifle is my number 1 favorite now. From all the research I have done on the short mag rifle out, the .270 beats them all. Jack O'Connor made the .270 one of the best rounds there is. he havested every animal in North America with it. Now they have it in a MAG? I am tickled sh*tless. By the way. The deer in my picture was shot at 380 yards with a silver tip reload of my own out of my .270win.

I had a .270 WSM that I recently sold, didn't shoot quite that flat, had some punch for a long ways out there. Didn't want to shoot anything that my other .270 Win liked, tried some Hornady 140 grain interlocks and bingo that was it.

Can you verify the steady of the rifle? Example did you flinch a little bit up when you pulled the trigger? That is flat!! My standard .270, 3000 fps accurbond at 100 yards is 2" high, at 200 yards it 4-1/2" high and zeroed in at 300 and at 500 yards is 5 MOA which I don't remember in inches but I believe it is exceeding 35-40 inches. Most guns after 350-400 yards start dropping like a rock. You need to go out and shoot that gun and see what' it's doing and tell us your secret :)

Thats a standard .270... Again I have never owned a .270wsm. If I have a box and a half of shells through this i would be surprised and that includes sighting it in when I first got it.. I plan on doing a lot of checking and shooting with this shortly. Flinching? Maybe, but after missing a booker the day before, I was pretty steady with bipods and laying down with a good anchor when I took the shot. I will let you know what I find. Maybe after this weekend. I will be doing some predator hunting.

If you go back to your original post, you mention .270 WSM twice nothing about a .270 Win. I'd be waiting to hear from the US Ordinance Dept. if I had something that shot that flat. I've been shooting out to five hundred meters (547 yards) for over twenty years and never seen anything shoot that flat.

I don't understand your post. I AM talking about a .270 WSM. The comments about a .270 WIN, which I have shot for 30 years, were in reference to comparing a .270 WIN to a .270 WSM. that somone had made. I don't think that a .270 WIN would shoot the same as a .270 WSM. So your point is what? My post was to get info on if anyone else had had this type of performance with a .270 WSM and was this normal for this round. I have no reason to lie about my experience with what happened. The only way this isn't true, is if the 2 guys that were there were wrong in their ranging of the shot.

This is my last post on this subject. If you have a .270 whatever sighted in at two inches high at one hundred yards (roughly a two hundred yard zero), and it drops eight inches at 517 yards, your gun would be on the verge of blowing up or your bolt would have to be pounded open with a sledge. I have access to the Silhouette range at Rio Salado and Ben Avery if would like to show any interested party's how flat your gun shoots we can arrange a day to do it.
