murfys69law Report post Posted March 13, 2015 3 years ago I bought a .270 WSM. I had never hunted with this round or this rifle before. Got it sighted in at 2" high at 100yrds. Went hunting and dropped my first speed goat ever after 30 yrs of trying for a tag at 517 yards. I shoot a lot of long range rounds with my other guns so I am confident with my abilities. I have a Nikon Monarch mil dot 2.5x10 on the rifle. I held the crosshair even with it's back and the round dropped approx. 8" at that range. I was shooting Fusion 130 grn rounds out of the box. I was impressed at how flat shooting this round is. I hadn't had much time to do any longrange with this new rifle at the time or since as I have not been drawn in a while. I am just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone else as far as the drop and sighting in at 2" high @100 yrds of the .270WSM Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Big Browns Report post Posted March 13, 2015 Shooting animals using calculated hold over is very difficult! I highly recommend learning to use a turret!!!! When you get all your gun info put into a balistic calculator it makes shooting long range a lot easier and takes the guess work out of shooting. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I do have rifles with MOA and BDC turrets. However this one doesn't hence the mil-dot scope. I have never shot at that yardage without a scope that has those features. I am trying to learn how it works without having the "dial a deer" scope feature. I will say that I had calculated all possible situations before the shot. Wind was calm, level ground, bi-pods used, good anchor point, etc... so I did feel very good about taking the shot. I also had 2 friends spotting for me as well. Thanks for your feedback. Even with 2" high @ 100 yards, I think you got really lucky hitting that buck with holding on the top of his back. I have some fast, flat shooting rounds, but nothing than even comes close. .25-06 Ackley shooting a 115 Berger VLD @ 3400FPS=1.8" high @ 100, and 25.0" low at 515. .300RUM shooting 175 SMK @ 3200FPS=1.3" high at 100, and 34.4" low at 515. .300RUM shooting 175 Barnes LRX @ 3360fps=1" high @ 100, and 29" low at 515. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

No laser..they are not legal. Good try tho. All I know is that 2 gentelmen watched the shot with 12x50 Swarovski binos. After the kill they ranged from where I was to where the animal was laying with a Leupold 1000 yrd rangefinder and it was 517 yrds. As far as lucky? I beg to differ. I meassured the drop on the goat and it was between 8 and 9 inches. This may be what your rifles do. I know this is what mine did. As far as your 25-06 dropping over 2 feet at 515. bogles my mind. I have a 300 win mag shooting 180 cor-loct with 72 grns of 4350 IMR with CCI mag primers @3140 fps. At 500 yrds it only drops 18 1/4" I tend to think that your 25-06 would be flatter shooting rifle than that. Don't know..Not my rifle Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
