teamrealtree Report post Posted March 1, 2015 Well I was blessed to fill both of my javelina tags for this year. The first one was my archery boar I took back in January. I just took the second one on the last day of the season and much tougher than I expected. I usually like to hunt pigs with a bow but I decided this year I was going to take one with my 243 that my grandpa built for me when I was 12 years old as I had never taken anything with it. When my grandpa was building rifles he was defiantly a craftsmen and always went all out with everything, this rifle was no exception. Because it is such a work of art I've always been supper protective of it which made hunting with it pretty difficult. But i decided I really wanted to harvest an animal with it as my grandpa intended for it to be used. After being shocked that i could not find any pigs in my favorite spot for 4 days I was getting pretty frustrated and a bit embarrassed if I'm honest. Thursday morning I glassed like crazy and just like the rest of the week, nothing! At about 9:45 after praying all morning that I could fill this tag I decided to hike up the draws I had been glassing thinking maybe the heard was bedded down and I was missing them. I just so happened to look down at my scope and notice it was all fogged up. Stupid me I got rained on, on Tuesday and my scope being an older one my grandpa had on there was obviously not water proof. I raised my gun and couldn't see a thing past 10 yards. I really didn't want to go all the way home to grab another gun mostly because I was set on using my 243 but I also was not going take a shot I wasn't comfortable with and risk wounding a pig. Sad, frustrated, and tired I decided to just pack it in. Even if i found them getting a shot would be tough if not impossible. And of course what do I see on the way back to my truck?? A heard of pigs 100 yards away working their way up a hill. I raised my gun just to see a cloudy javelina shaped figure in my scope. I watched about 5 really nice pigs give me clear shots that I couldn't take...wow! I then remembered that I could see if my target was in the sun and I was in the shade. Long story short I stayed with them and was fortunate to get that exact opportunity! This guy walked out in the sun while I was under an oak tree about 100 yards away and I took the shot. Needless to say The Good Lord was on my side for this one. Once I got my pig skinned and quartered I had a very important stop to make, I went to show my grandpa.
