murfys69law Report post Posted March 29, 2015 I did this every year for 12 years. Caught massive amounts of Tuna. Big Eye, Blue Fin, Albacore, Yellow Tail and the occasional Dorado. (Dorado are the best eating I think other than Seabass or Grouper) I have cooked it every way you can imagine and it still tastes fishy. Try to find someone at HM or Point Loma that does bottom fishing. The fish are better eating and you can catch some whoppers sometimes. If going just for the thrill, tuna are a real fight. Seaforth does have better parking but they seem to be expensive from my experience. Contact "The Prowler" at Point Loma. Cpt Buzz. He can steer you to some good people. Some toro sashimi on the boat would be awesome!

Teo Report post Posted April 2, 2015 Last summer I took my 13 year old and 17 year old daughters on a half day sunset trip out of Dana Point Harbor. They put us on a ton of Calico Bass and some really good Barracuda. It was alot of fun for us to just catch a bunch of fish, alot of which we took back to the rental house and grilled for 4th of July. But on Tuesdays, they offer 1/2 price Tuesdays, so it's pretty inexpensive. http://danawharf.com/ Jeff
Havasuhunter Report post Posted April 2, 2015 Rock fishing in deep water is almost as fun as rolling around in cholla cactus, but not quite. If you can get on yellowtail, do it. They are great grilled. Some people just don't like fish. Marinaded and grilled yellow tail is hard to beat. I don't know how anyone doesn't like tuna, but my friends that don't like tuna generally like yellowtail steaks on the grill. Myself, I'll take tuna, but dorado, yellowtail and 80% of the other fish you'll catch are pretty good. Only two I cant handle is makeral or skipjack. Barracuda get mushy on the party boats when left in s gunny sack but they are even decent if iced down after catching them.

Havasuhunter must be an expert about this. I didn't say they weren't fun to catch. (tuna) I just said if you can get some bottom fishing and and catch some good fish like grouper or sea bass they are better eating. And yes yellow tail is not bad. But I don't know if Havasuhunter realizes.......YELLOWTAIL ARE NOT TUNA!!!!!!!!! They are part of the Jack family.
Havasuhunter Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Yes, that's why I refered to yellowtail and tuna as separate fish. Not sure why your taking offense to my post, it was not directed at you at all. Just pointing out as BigLakeJake did that bottom fishing sucks and is a lousy way to spend a day most of the time. If you do a drop or two after fishing for other stuff, then it's not so bad. Depending on your tastes, bottom fish are not better than yellowtail, but different, they are all good. As far as being and expert, I lived in Southern CA for over 30 years. There were times even I fished Saltwater 2-3 times a week, everything from spotted bay bass tournaments to offshore yellowtail and Tuna on the Kelp paddies and offshore banks. Me and several buddies owned personal center consoles and fished everything within 50 miles of San Diego, Catalina, San Clemente, etc. I've caught 1000s of yellowtail and Tuna, about 100 Dorado and just about every other sportfish off of Southern CA and Northern Baja, so if there is one thing I'm an expert at, this is it. Just trying to lend good advice to people that are less experienced and going to plan a trip requiring a lot of money and a lot of travel. To OP or anyone else wanting info, feel free to PM me. I have friends that currently fish weekly off SoCal, fish the Saltwater bass Tourneys and work on the Party boats. For a rockfish trip, I recomend Northern CA, since most of it is closed in SoCal and NorCal has better fish that they catch in shallower water. Brian
murfys69law Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Whatever Brian..the way you made your comment WAS directed at me. I have been fishing salt and freshwater for 40 years. I have worked and fished on boats from Cameron Louisiana to the Baja Tip..Your opinion is no greater than mine. Enough said.
Havasuhunter Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Once again, not comparing the valuxury of your opinion to mine, just trying to point people in the right direction of Southern CA. I'd love to here your thoughts on when and where to fish off of Louisisna. I have a friend that lives in Gulfport MS and have been wanting to plan a trip out there for a while. That's a whole different ball game down there. One day I'll make it over there.
5guyshunting Report post Posted April 3, 2015 I like the bottom fish in alaska, its alot of work but, the halibut are the best.
murfys69law Report post Posted April 3, 2015 I won't Get in to a pi$$ing match. I will just say that ONE of the best eating fish IMO and thousands of other people is the Redfish out of the Gulf. They are true fighters and have beautiful large white flaky filets. You can catch them on fly rod, shrimp, (bubba gump is the best) lures, squid, and other baits. I will say that Flounder is a very good eating fish as well. They are part of the Halibut family. Working on shrimp boats as a kid I got the chance to eat numerous types of fish and have found that sport fish are fun to catch and some are very good eating but it's hard to beat Redfish. If you ever go try to get with Malcom Savoie in Cameron, LA. They have a harbor right there and he can steer you to the people in the know.
Havasuhunter Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Nice red. I caught some in the high teens in Florida, but they were too big for the slot limit. Very cool fish. Nice thing about the gulf is all the shallow water stuff. Had a blast catching sea trout on light spinning rods one time. When's the best time to catch a Variety out there? For San Diego I'd say June, July, Aug for variety, but this year who knows. Strange things happen with El Niño. The sand dad trips of So cal aren't bad, especially for kids. They're tiny, but the best flatfish I've eaten anywhere. Alaskan Halibut my buddy brought back was awesome too. I'll be in Nor Cal for a month in a few weeks. We may go rock fishing out of Bodega bay, I'll post pics if we do. Get some big lings up there making it bearable.
