Three antlered Elk Euro

Recommended Posts

This is a little bit of a story, but some may be interested. Started with me and the dog finding this expired elk while scouting last summer. Looked to have been dead for maybe 6 to 12 months. I got ahold of the G&F and they agreed to go out and take a look with me. It was maybe around a 3 mile round trip hike, and the warden was great guy for putting up with me and going the extra mile:) He couldn't see any fowl play or obvious causes of death, so he let me take the head. I learned alot about G&F officers that afternoon. He says when he is driving on the highway and someone passes him going 100 miles and hour, he will pull them over and give them a ticket, and they always think that he isn't allowed to or something. They often don't receive full "law enforcement" respect that others would normally give to DPS or police etc.

Anyway, needless to say, the head I carried out still had hardened leather skin and a foul odor attached. It took many hours of work, two boiling sessions, and covering the antlers in Arm and Hammer Odor Fighter paste to get it cleaned up decent and to kill the odor.

I de-greased it, and the wife says she would rather have it copper than white. I did Rustoleum "Hammered" spray paint and I think it turned out nice enough to be allowed into her domain.

Wow! That's an amazing find and you did a great job with that! Please consider posting that under the shed hunting section under the pinned topic "freaks of the woods". Your find would definitely qualify. Can't believe I didn't see this until just now. Thanks for posting.
