Animas River winter trip

Recommended Posts

Just got home late Sat night from 4 days on the Animas south of Durango, CO. I'd never been fishing in the dead of winter and wanted to experience that. Plus, it was a good excuse to get back into that part of the country. Any excuse works, really...

I fished the Ute Tribal waters south of town, with one day spent on public water at the Purple Cliffs area. To cut to the chase, I didn't land a single fish. I did catch one fish but that glorious experience ended literally seconds after it started when the tippet broke at the connection with the leader. It wasn't a knot failure because the knot was still on the tippet ring. Super disappointed/frustrated. I tried everything in my arsenal except for dries but I never saw a fish rise once, and I was looking for it. Durango was awesome in the none super-tourist season and it felt more like regular life rather than the carnival atmosphere in the summer. I talked to some friends at a local shop and met up with a local guy who runs his own blog specifically on the Animas River. He gave me a lot of tips for where and what to fish. Ultimately, it didn't catch me anything but it was sound advice nonetheless. Its been 4 months since I was last in the area and heading out of town was difficult. But I have the family vacation to look forward to in July and then another solo trip in the fall.

Here's a few pics to help fuel the fire:

I Love that area. Great pics. Too bad about not landing anything but at least it didn't interrupt your drinking!

I cant believe you didn't catch anything on such a nice piece of water. Beautiful pics! I've wanted to fish the Animas for years. I've been told it can be a tough place to fish! Thanks for sharing!
