new toy, what to build..?

Recommended Posts

With a shorter than 700 SA box length, I would build something short between a .22 to 6.5mm. Like a .22-250, .22 Dasher, .223 WSSM, .22 PPC, 6x47L, 6 BR, 6 PPC, 6 Creed, 6 Dasher, .243 WSSM, .250 Ackley, .25 WSSM, 6.5 PPC, 6.5x47L, 6.5 Creed.

Any of the 6.5s would need to limit the bullets to the 120-130 grain class, as the 140s would take up a lot of case capacity in the shorter action length.

I really like the 6mm Dasher and 6 Creed myself. I have been considering it for a future build with a fast twist long barrel shooting the 95 to 105 Bergers.

260 Ackley with 140s at 2950 fps and the 284 win with the 162-168gr bullets are essentially indentical in performance out to 1000 yards give or take ~80 foot pounds of energy. 284 win really shines with heavies launched from a 30" tube.

I guess I wasnt real clear... they are the same length as a short action 700 box... but they dont have the room to put a Wyatt's in like you can do with the 700.

I have a Dasher and love it! Im not afraid of some of the more random calibers for myself. This project I was looking to appeal a little more to the masses though, in the event that I sale it down the road.

Stomp, you getting thoes velocities from a regular a regular short action seating depth or were they throated longer for the heavier bullets?

Regular Savage short action. In fact my newest match barrel I installed was throated a touch short for my liking but I am still getting 2940 fps out it with plenty of room to chase the lands as the barrel wares. I even have the Berger 140 vld set .025" from the lands which makes things a touch shorter. Even if you had to seat the longer 140s a touch deeper to fit the mag I don't think you would have any problems reaching that velocity.

I don't have a .284 Win. But it will definitely be to long to work in a standard short action with the heavier bullets. My 6.5-284 has a C.O.A.L of 3.214" with a 140gr Berger vld, the .284 will be every bit of that with 168s or heavier im sure. Your best bet for a 7mm cartridge would probably be the 7-08 Improved as mentioned above.

A custom rifle in a 6mmXC would make an outstanding long range deer rifle and on my list to do.

.243 Ackley

6 Creed

Even a fast twist 22-250 improved able to handle an 80gr bullet would make a sweet rig too.

Nope I agree with you on the 284.. wasnt seeing that it is well suited for a short action even w a Wyatts Box.

Ya we did a 6XC for my brother and getting ready to do a 22BR throated for the 75 gr Amax.

Ive thought some about a 6SLR..have looked at the 6 Creed too.. lean a little more towards the SLR since I already have the 243 brass and also I could use 6BR dies for that as well as the 6XC if I wanted.

Guys you do see the lathe yes. Not limited by bolt face. We machinists can make it whatever we want. Yes we can make it smaller too.
