apomeroy Report post Posted February 20, 2015 my bf tried to restore 40-50 yr old set of Antlers of a buck my grandfather shot and forgot to dilute the stain. It's so dark now. He used walnut and since the antlers were so chalky it just soaked it up. Is there anyway to lighten them or possibly fix it.

Becker Report post Posted February 20, 2015 ^^^^ yep! If the stain soaked in you are going to have to white wash them. The key is to not lay the paint on too thick. Watered back white and be patient. Start slow and really thin and add coat by coat until you think you would be able to re-stain. It doesn't hurt to have a little under color show through. Obviously antlers aren't one color or perfect.
Becker Report post Posted February 20, 2015 If you just goob thick white paint on you will loose all the detail in the antlers and will always be able to tell they were painted!
Pixman Report post Posted February 20, 2015 When I have darkened my sheds with mud and I want them a little lighter I sand them with a light sand paper so it whitens the high spots. I don't know if that would help these or not.
Sneaker Report post Posted February 20, 2015 The buck in my avatar became blood stained when I stripped the velvet. I need to do this process as well. What type of white paint would be the best to use? Just Acrylic?
