peloncillo Report post Posted February 12, 2015 I went down to Magdalena, Sonora to hunt on Rancho Aguaje del Taraicito. This is my fifth year hunting this ranch and ranch owner Justo and his family always make me feel welcome. I went for 9 days in the middle of January with a group of other hunters. All though I saw bucks every day I didn't see one that I had to pull the trigger on. I had a buck in mind that I wanted and I never saw him. Two of the other hunters tagged out and I think everyone had a great time. After I got home I was already planning my trip for next year and what I would have done differently. I received an e-mail from Justo that he had extended the hunting season until February 15. I have to thank my wife for being understanding of my coues addiction. I was able to get 2 more days off from work and the hunt was set. I got to the ranch on Friday afternoon and settled in. Saturday morning I went to my favorite glassing spot and found 3 does right away in front of me. It was still pretty dark and I kept watching the does feed hoping a buck would come by. As it got lighter I started glassing further away and I found The Buck bedded on an open hillside just over 800 yards away. I noticed there were 4 other bucks circling him. Then the doe stood up followed by The Buck. The other bucks immediately backed off a little further. I put my spotting scope on the tripod but I could tell through the 15s that he was The Buck. I took a picture through the scope and knew I had to get closer. I grabbed my rifle and rangefinder and took off through the cactus. I finally got to a spot where I would be able to see the hillside the deer were on. I found The Buck in my scope and pulled the trigger. I missed and decided I needed to get prone and try not to look at his antlers. With my last bullet in my rifle I squeezed the trigger and heard the sound of a solid hit. When I got the scope back to the area he was in I didn't see him but the other bucks came in and immediately started running the doe all over the hillside. I decided to go back to my pack at the glassing point and get more bullets and return to look for him. When I got back to the hillside I chased the deer off and started looking for the buck. I finally found him by almost stepping on him in the tall grass. I was beside myself with emotion and couldn't believe what I had just accomplished. I sat on that hillside for a long while admiring The Buck and running my hands over his antlers. I was very Lucky and feel blessed to have taken this deer.
