EagleEye Report post Posted February 11, 2015 Hi everyone looking to backpack hunt 27 next month for bear but have spent little time in the unit. Does anyone know if the bears are still hibernating on mar 20. I would really like to go into the blue range primitive area and or bear wallow just not sure if this will be to early. Any info would be gladly apreciated.

creed_az_88 Report post Posted February 11, 2015 The later the better. Boars come out earlier than sows usually so that's a plus for hunting early but on average a large portion of bears don't come out until may. I read a study done on New Mexico bears throughout the western part of the state and the dates that they come out of "hibernation" is pretty much the same for bears up north along the Canadian border. If I remember right temperature had very little effect in getting them to leave their dens. Good luck. Tough hunt.
520HUNT Report post Posted February 11, 2015 Just depends on the weather... Pray for warm weather so the grasses start growing and they have something to eat.
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted February 11, 2015 I have played with this hunt a few times and may go this year again but sightings are far and few between. We usually go calling and scouting for other hunts on this one.

GreyGhost85 Report post Posted February 11, 2015 i run cameras pretty much year-round in 27, the earliest i have ever got a bear on cam is early-mid april. The bears i do get on cam early in the year are always big boars though. it's a really tough hunt, but spring offers a chance to kill a really big boar with a nice hibernation coat
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted February 11, 2015 The worst part oF this hunt is the meat is not great, especially compared to august bear. Or Oct even better. Let em fatten up first.
