New AZ arch deer dates!

Recommended Posts

WOW bobbyo ...... DotShot....

Cmon guys sounds like somebody didn't get an Elk tag this year........................

Are you serious???? How is overlapping the hunt going to improve the quality of the deer hunt????? The wanning monsoon

You guys are missing the whole point. The deer season has always been fine before, why the changes now? The response to this is to band together and do the right thing for everyone, and as far as deer hunters in the woods during the elk hunt.... Maybe not a big deal in say... unit 36B.. I've lived in Arizona my whole life and been an archery hunter for many, many years.. Have you ever hunted unit 7 during the arhery deer hunt??? It is a circus not to mention any unit surrounding the Flagstaff and Payson areas... We are talking a 7 day overlap during the best time to hunt.

Maybe your views would be different if you drew a tag

I did in fact draw an archery elk tag (Camp Navajo), and no i do not hunt up north fo archery deer as i am quite content with my fav area (36C) hence the reason my statement was more of an inquiry so i could get responses from those people who do hunt up in that area during those times.

People are saying that if we were to get the seasons to not overlap we would have to cut a week off of the archery deer season. How about instead of cutting a week off of the deer season why dont we just bump it up a week? Have it start on August 24th and run through Setember 13th and there wouldn't be any overlaping with the elk hunts! I just pulled out some regulations from 2003/2004 and what they did was for the units that had elk hunts they had the archery deer hunts run from August 22nd til Sepetember 11th the day before opening day of archery elk and the units that did not have elk tags ran an additional week. Why could we not do the same setup this year. There were no complaints back then and everybody was a little happier at least.

I have yet been able to hunt much up north so I'm not to fimiliar with it all but how many bow hunters do you expect to see during that overlap? The few additional bowhunter in a unit i think is not all that much but once again I'm not to fimilar with hunting up there. If we are just talking about hunting pressure... when the archery deer hunt went to the day before the elk hunted started, didn't those elk got pushed around a feel a bit of pressure then to. I'm just putting this out there and accualy I think they should not overlap the hunts. I think the idea of letting those with elk tags take deer during that time is the best option. I feel sick just thinking about having an opertunity at a bull get spoiled by another hunter, so all you with elk tags, good luck and I hope you fill your tag.

IHunt2live,

You are correct in assuming the elk get pushed around during the archery deer hunt. The difference is that during an overlap of the hunts there would be an increase in conflicts over tanks etc. Most deer hunters do not hunt the full day either and in the morning and the afternoons the traffic in the woods would be high. Just this last year in unit 7W I hunted the previous 7 days before the elk hunt started (yes Monday through Thursday too) as I did not even get a deer tag last year and I pulled out of camp on openning morning of the elk hunt. During the week in the middle of the day I did not see very much pressure or traffic, however the mornings and afternoons were terrible. There were ALOT of people driving the roads with vehicles and ATV's and most were very unethical and did not care about anybody else but themselves. The weekend was way worse!!!

Keep in mind 7W is not the most popular archery deer unit, across the highway in 7E it was much, much worse. I am not grouping all archery deer hunters in with the idiots I seen last year, I am usually one of the ones out there chasing the deer in August and September and I know most of us care about and respect other people while hunting. In the case of the elk, the pressure from earlier hunts is unavoidable and accepted as being the norm for many years, it will be the bodies in the field and the traffic from hunters on the road that will hurt the elk hunt. I also agree the best idea would be to start the deer hunt earlier and let it run the normal amount of time and end before the elk hunt starts. Limiting the deer hunters to those who hold valid archery elk tags in that unit would be acceptable ONLY if they do not change the dates. I for one would not hunt in any areas where there is an elk hunt going on if I did not have a tag, I know of quite a few areas where there is not any elk that I can chase the deer. I know that is not fair or reasonable for someone who lives in Flagstaff or Payson etc, still the best option is to change the dates to ensure everyone has a fair chance without being over harrassed or frustrated over the amount of people in the woods.

I just hope it changes to make it fair for everyone.

The main issue with overlap as huntumup has already said will be competition over waterholes in select units. Deer hunters like them and if for some reason there is no bugeling going on many elk hunters will resort to this technique. Throughout the ELK rutt there is many periods(days, week) where Elk will not bugle, especially if it is hot. If this happens it is very advisable to have some wet location as a backup plan. If the Deer hunt is still overlapping and there is a heat wave with no rain. waterholes will be very very desireable for hunters of both species. This will create intense competition for waterholes and possible violence. Of coarse if it is a wet monsoon, mild teperatures, with bulls bugeling there could be no problems and very few conflicts between deer and elk hunters which maybe a disaster in itself because G+F might think it is ok to run more hunts that coincide.

Young Hunter just stated the correct solution. No one even acknowledged his post. You guys just keep blabbing about what you want. I hope you will see the light and see you need to show up to the Commission meeting and support the facts that Young Hunter just stated.

What younghunter stated is what I was told is the probable solution, when I talked with Leonard Ordway today he stated that they were having a huge public backlash on this proposal. The elk season was adjusted apparently at a meeting as per archery elk hunters requests, and when they were told then that the seasons would overlap no one spoke up, so they went forward with it. The way he stated it they have received numerous calls and emails regarding this and the public is against it. He asked what my solution would be and I stated exactly as Christian did, move the deer and turkey seasons back a week, from what he said the commission would be made aware of the outcry and even he is expecting quite a few people at the meeting to express their displeasure with the overlap. I see no reason it can't be changed, hopefully the commissioners listen.

Thanks Keith and Dave for the comments and Keith for going above and beyond to talk to someone that can possibly help!

I am not sure if I will be able to make it to the meeting because I have to drop family off at the airport but I will do my best to at least make an appearance and try to voice my opinion.

I've been off the internet for a few days and now I see this. I checked the next meeting dates, and it looks like I already missed the Mesa meeting. Can anyone update me as to how the meeting went?

My concern is much much greater than this single issue. My concern is that the G&F heads actually think these decisions are okay. They don't seem to even forsee the same problems that you and I can clearly see. I'm concerned about how incompetent the G&F heads really are.

I've already fired off my slew of hate mail and suggested that the commission stop holding in their farts. Otherwise they travel up their spine, get lodged in their brain and then come out as sh!tty ideas.

In my conversations with Leonard he had also stated that he was really surprised at the outcry that he is getting over the overlap of elk and deer archery hunts. I reminded Leonard that at the Dec. meeting we were fighting over the issue of trying to keep 1,400 antlerless archery tags. We spent a lot of our time on that issue and that was where our focus was at the Dec. Commission meeting. Unfortunatly, the overlap in seasons was not addressed, although it may have been mentioned and fallen through the cracks.

My hopes would be that the Dept will consider moving archery deer and turkey a week earlier and it would more align with where it used to be. Prior to recent changes, we had been able to hunt archery deer through the first week of archery elk in units"where there was not an open elk season". I would like to see us get that back!

I will be at the Commission meeting.

Amanda had posted that Leonard would be at Desert Christian Archers meeting on the 19th, actually that is a mistake that I will take blame for, DCA is the 16th the same as ADA and I am sure Leonard can not make both. Maybe we could get Brian or someone else to attend DCA?

"Hunter Recruitment and Retention" are used a lot by the Dept. today, I am totally in agreement with them on that statement but at what cost? We only have so many tools to works with.

Dick,

Just a clarification before things get too confused. The ADA meeting is on the 17th (Tues) not the 16th. I think you meant to write that both the Desert Christian archers and the ADA meeting are on Tues the 17th. Leonard was under the impression that the DCA meeting was the 19th, but apparently it's the 17th.

here are the minutes as posted on the AGFD website. Maybe you guys can find reference to the archery deer/elk overlap? The only thing I saw in briefly looking through it was Leonard saying he would fix and overlap in some other elk seasons.
