Lance Report post Posted April 10, 2007 The new hunt reg reccomendations are out and the archery deer dates overlap with the arch elk dates I'm not to sure what to think about that It could be good if you want to combo hunt, but bad with all the other hunters in the woods that don't have elk tags. Hmmmm? Lance
JVS Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I agree. That would piss me off to know a thousand deer hunters would ruin my parade "(if)" I had an elk tag. You hit the nail on the head sdr...drop the success, raise the # of tags, and bam...more revenue. You've got to be kidding me. What a circus. Oh, FYI---I was looking for out of state hunting opportunites...because the AZ opportunities are starting to suck...and we as Arizona residents can hunt deer and turkey in Arkansas CHEAPER than we can in Arizona. Go figure.
azcouesandelk Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I know for me I drew my first archery bull tag and am not to happy about the deer tags being open during the hunt. It can ruin a hunt. I just hope that most archery hunters realize that there is an elk hunt going on and not to go out and possibly ruin a once in a lifetime opprotunity for an elk hunter. bobbyo Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Just from the experience of having pig coincide with my deer hunt this last October. I will say you are not going to like it. In one of my favorite canyons it went from 3 people in 2005 to 20 plus in 2006.There was large groups in every direction. I was beginning to think my friends were printing road maps to my spot. When I finally asked one of these interlopers what he was doing. He said hunting pigs I knew right then and there that was my last october hunt in that unit. I think I will become a full time deer bowhunter and plan my hunts in late September in Elk units. I love hearing bugles when I am deer hunting. What unit do you have again Younghunter? Bob Ps Combo hunt when you have an Arizona Archery Bull tag? Let me say it again, Combo hunt when you have an Arizona Archery Bull tag?
azcouesandelk Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I realize that I can have a combo hunt but I do not want that on this hunt. I know what people are thinking... if a big ol muley were to step out infront of me and I had a chance at him I would take him. Well in this case I would not. I am up there dedicating my hunt to elk and elk only. I messed up this last january spending all my time chasing deer that I only was able to see 3 herds of javelina. Also the added amount of deer hunters in the field can and will affect a hunt like you said bobbyo. I just want my hunt and everybody else's archery elk hunts to go as they would have before hand. COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I had an experience last year similar to what they are proposing. On the Early Rifle Bull hunt in Unit 10, I had a camp move in right on top of my #1 bull the night before the hunt started! The bull changed patterns and disapeared......I thought it was another Elk hunter and wasn't too upset about it....until the next day, as I drove past the camp, there was a fricken Muley buck hangin' in the tree!!! This buck was in velvet and this was on the Early Rifle Bull hunt!!!! G+F thought it was a great idea to put a Juniors Deer hunt smack dab in the middle of a hunt most guys wait half a lifetime to draw! WTF! I had no clue that hunt was going on, I never even thought the G+F would do that!
coues krazy Report post Posted April 10, 2007 They are recomending 900 buck tags for 12a west, and 800 doe tags! Did the deer population explode on the kaibab? This just proves that game and fish are not about quality anymore, only about $$$$$. I am actually glad that I did not draw archery elk now. I cant emagine that many people being in the woods at once. That doesnt sound like much of a quality hunt either.
muley Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Game and Fish are complete Morons.... Just when we dont think they can get any stupider, they prove us wrong.

jgabler Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Younghunter, I too have just drawn my first bull tag in my life, and it is an archery tag as well. I can't imagine trying to get in close enough to a bull with a few hundred more people in the areatrying to run around finding a deer. This is a bunch of horse crap. I was trying to go to school to wrok for these people and the more bonehead moves that hey keep doing, the more I am glad that I didn't. Everyone needs to ban together, go to the meetings, and voice their opinions against the G&F to try and bring reason to their minds.
DesertBull Report post Posted April 10, 2007 OTC archery turkey dates are the same time period as the elk and deer too. I think some bear hunts might overlap too.
grizzly Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I dont understand why game and fish cant pull their head out.... Why are they having archery deer during the elk hunts?????????? Elk tags are far and few between, and to wait years to get one and have some idiot screw it up is wrong.... I dont understand the logic behind it. There are many people that waited, and some that did not, but they certainly were not planning on having deer hunters in the area. Game and Fish needs to make that known BEFORE the elk apps so people know what they are getting into. There is no hope with the commission we have now..... Dont make the mistake of thinking that Game and Fish are trying to do whats best and just screwing up. I believe G&F has been infiltrated by anti-hunters who are trying to ruin the experience for us so we will give up and go do something else. I have dealt with people down there who didnt give a rip about what was going on and the only conclusion I could come to is they were going out of their way to be miserable and contentious. Of course not all are like that but it only takes a few in key places to ruin it for everyone.
bowhuntinmaniac Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Opening date is again on Labor Day weekend..........so most of Phoenix will be here.......and they say they want quality of hunts? Actually, I think what they are trying to do is get enough complaints, they will have ammunititon to put the archery deer to a draw.
redline410 Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Fire off an email, make a phone call and make time to attend any commision meeting you can, we need to get it back!!!! Younghunter, Gabescoues and anyone else who has drawn a tag this year, especially first timers, I feel for you boys. It's bad and only getting worse, every year its one more little thing and the silent majority gets on the hunting forums for a good old fashioned bitch session. But last I checked preaching to the choir isn't all that effective..... The AZGFD hates me I promise you that and I'm fairly certain Ordway screens his calls for fear I may be on the line. I've come to the realization that there is a very good possibility that I've been black balled from the draw system and that's fine but, if I'm going down, I'm going down with a hand full of nuts and fist full of teeth. All of you better have the same attitude or sooner rather than later we'll all be spending the weekends on the couch watching Jackie the "Buckmaster's" gay butt sitting in a tree on some private deer farm and day dreaming about the good ol days when bow hunting elk in Nov. with 10, 000 of our closest friends was something we wished we could still do....... AAAAAHHHHHH......I'm Freaking PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's time to rooster up Kats and Dolls, this snow ball is just about to big to stop.
jbone Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Competition for water holes during the elk hunt wasn't hard enough, now compete with all the archery deer hunters for the same water holes. Talk about some fights, g&f will need to update their hunter ethic procedures for water holes I guess. An archery deer tag is all most of us have and that's a shame for all of you with elk tags because you bet we'll be out there hunting since it may be another 14 years until we get a tag. Hopefully we archery deer hunters take into consideration the odds of that elk tag you got and give some room for you to hunt that bull of a lifetime. Hopefully you're not hunting in an area were a deer hunter has found that buck of a lifetime and camps out on the waterhole that your bull is using. I'm sure it will get pretty messy in september. I imagine we'll all have more trail cameras stolen than usual, due to so many hunters in the woods hunting and scouting. Thanks game and fish we appreciate what you do for hunting and opportunities in arizona!!! Truely a disgrace for our up and coming youth hunters and long time hunters.
