Rattlesnakes

Recommended Posts

Going thru pics and late for work but found this one, figured I'd post up quick. Not a rattler but one of the coolest snakes I've found over the years. It came slithering up to me while glassing off a small rock knob! I actually heard it slithering over branches and leaves before actually seeing it! This was just north of Hermosillo, MX.

Rschaumb thanks for sharing those pics!

COOSEFAN, Your rattlesnake is indeed and Arizona black. Although the do turn black as they age they retain the ability to change color and rather dramatically. I have caught them when they are as black as the night sky and within minutes turned into a similar looking snake to the one you posted. I have observed color change in social situations as well. Such as a male approaching a female. I do not know why they can change so dramatically however stress seems to be a factor but I also hypothesis that they communicate via that method as well. Stellar looking snake BTW.

That Sonoran Boa is awesome as well! I saw my first in Alamos, a bit farther south.

The Boa was slithering below me on a rock shelf. I put my leather gloves on and jumped on him like it was a crocodile fully expecting a battle but it hardly flinched! It was the most docile snake I've ever found. My client did a little more than flinch tho, let's just say he was NOT a snake lover! LOL! JIM>

Mr. Boa got a backpack ride and enjoyed a nice warm night at the ranch house that night. I took him back the next morning and let him go right where i found him. I had to take him back and scare the heck outta my Mexican friend who I knew hated snakes. I asked him to get something out of my pack, which was sitting on the dining room table...I'll never forget that scream and dance he did!!! :-)

I'm sorry, guys. I know it is politically incorrect and I fully expect to be called ignorant and uncaring, but I detest all snakes and find nothing interesting or enjoyable in being near or observing them. I have had many encounters with rattlesnakes in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and have come across green and black mambas, spitting cobras, pythons, puff adders, and a gaboon viper in 22 trips to Africa. If there were a vote to exterminate every poisonous species on the planet, I'd vote early and often, and work to get that issue passed. I have stepped on rattlesnakes and been threatened by them too many times to talk about it. We've found them in our yard in Tucson, but the final straw came last year when my wife came mere inches from being bitten at a townhouse we own in Green Valley when she leaned down to pick up something that bast@rd was hiding under.
