ndaniel Report post Posted April 3, 2007 I'm curious to see how many people spend time out in 7 east and what you think as far as the elk hunting in that unit? Not looking for your spots or anything, but just curious of your opinions. I've spent a lot of time out there the past few years and I'd like to see what others think about that unit. COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 3, 2007 I think you might get some very different opinions about this. I like it on the archery hunts....but the problem usually is that the elk will jump units during their daily/nightly routine in some areas making it hard to work em' or find em' consistently. I also ( personally ) wouldn't want the late hunt in that unit. It can be done, but can be very tough! Glass as much country as possible on the late hunt....and pray hard for a good rut for the archery hunt! JIM>
DesertBull Report post Posted April 3, 2007 If you are willing to climb, it can be very good. See those avalanche slides to the north of the ski runs, in the dark timber, up above Hart Prairie?
ndaniel Report post Posted April 3, 2007 Yeah I agree with what you are saying Jim, they do cross a lot during that time of the year. DesertBull-haha I know exactly where you are talking about

Huntn coues Report post Posted April 3, 2007 My daughters had that 7E bull late tag a couple of years ago and it was tough. I did quite of bit of scouting in that unit leading up to the November hunt and thought I had a plan. But when the hunt finally came my plan went out the window. This unit has ALOT of easy access to it for the road hunters and is covered with a maze roads. We did get er done but be prepared to climb high and glass and glass and glass some more. Good luck! Lance Report post Posted April 3, 2007 What tag/hunt do you have? You can hunt high, but so does everyone else. You could hunt low, but so does everyone else, You could hunt in the middle, but so does everyone else. Or you can just try to out hunt the other hunters and that is something not everyone else can do The elk are VERRY call shy in this unit compared to others. ndaniel Report post Posted April 4, 2007 I had a cow tag in '05 and a bull tag in '06, both archery, I don't have a tag this year and I don't think I'll be putting in for that unit again. I was/am just curious who has hunted it and what their opinions are.
GRONG Report post Posted April 6, 2007 Awesome archery hunt........ One heck of a SUCK rifle hunt!!!!
anthonyrmatthews Report post Posted April 6, 2007 I have to agree with Grong about the archery hunt being awesome! Just have to do some footwork. The rifle hunt can be fun also, just tough to get away from other hunters. You may think you have a place to yourself, and some road hunter drives up on you. Anyhow, I would take a tag there any day. Am taking a hunter in there this year for the rifle hunt.
Basser15 Report post Posted April 6, 2007 It's not the best unit in the state. Small bulls and not many of them.

Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted April 6, 2007 Awesome archery hunt........ One heck of a SUCK rifle hunt!!!! That about sums it up!!!! I'd rather sit on my butt at home than have to guide another hunter in that late hunt!! ....... unless Snow Bowl has a 72" base... ... then it would be a good hunt.... there are some decent bulls in that unit..... you just don't see them unless there is lots o' snow up high. Lance Report post Posted April 7, 2007 Hey guys, I actually like the unit. It has taken many years to figure out the late rifle hunt, but I like to think we got it figured out pritty good. It helps to live here. We shyed away from it for many years because it is so hard and unlike other units. There are definently easer units. But now we run excelent success on good bulls and have been applying hunters for that hunt the past few years. So you fellow CWT guides out there that don't want to touch it, please send them our way, we have grown to love it! Thanks Lance
