JLW Report post Posted January 20, 2015 couple seasons back walked off from the truck to glass the other side of this small canyon... had to walk farther than expected (yup, left the bow in the truck) found a good spot I could see and sat down to set up tripod and heard the brush start bustin.... 3 nice coues bucks come flying out down the small canyon and up the other side onto a flat. the deer settled and started working the finger and looked like they were going to bed. watched em for a while and they went behind some thick cedar trees so I went back to the truck and drove around to the other side of the flat. thinking they may have slipped out to the bigger canyon not far. I grabbed my bow and decided to walk the finger. nocked an arrow and started to creep through the cedars. get in about 100yds and come around a thick cedar and there they are all 3 standing there like 35 yds. all 4 of us probably had the oh sh1t look on our faces I know they did. already clipped on I drew my bow... (I had a trophy taker drop away pronghorn) I had my finger on the arrow as I was creeping and it apparently didn't dawn on me to let go as I drew................ the nock came off the string and the arrow slid backwards and hit the ground at my feet... as I muttered some bad words still at full draw my finger pulled the trigger and my bow went TWANG! all of this happened so fast....... my heart went from full speed to broken in 2 seconds! AZbowhntr Report post Posted January 21, 2015 I am from Idaho and never knew what coues deer were when I first moved here. I was hunting javelina down in 33 several years ago and was putting a stalk on some pigs. We were within about 100 yds when a coues buck gets between me and the javelina. Not knowing what a big buck was I was trying to shoe this little buck away. I was actually waving my arms at him at less than 50 yds. Little did I know that it was at least a 80" buck that was just standing there watching me. And I had a deer tag in my pocket. That one sticks out way more than any others but I am sure there are a few.

Elkhunter1 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 Opening day of the Aug. hunt found me atop a hill glassing the ridge I bedded him and a spike the night before. I watched them for over an hour before they bedded down in the morning sun. I made my game plan and executed it flawlessly even down to stepping on a doe and her fawn without spooking them. Prior to climbig out of the wash I picked an arrow out of my quiver, knocked it and I made it to the bush I estimated was 50 yards from the buck. I ranged him and he was 55. I waited for him to stand and when he did I drew back, settled the pin and released the arrow with the broadhead that only had dental bands holding the blades closed. I hit the big buck in the front shoulder and got NO penetration. The blades opened as it was released. I SCREWED UP!!!! I was supposed to use shrink bands. I never saw him again despite my efforts over the last two years. He is the biggest buck I have gotten the pleasure of stalking. I have screwed up every season on deer since. lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 21, 2015 Nope. Never messed up. Not once. Never shot over the back of a 34" muley at 35 yards. Never missed 3 game animals from a treestand on the same day (turkey, coyote, mule deer). Never heard the "click" as I squeezed the trigger on game (but it would have showed me I didn't flinch at least). Never forgot ammo at home. Never drew back an arrow, had it fall off a rest, and drop a broadhead across my hand while I let down while 1.5 miles from my truck and another 1.5 hour drive to a hospital, resulting in 27 stitches. Never impaled a catfish dorsal barb right through my palm while removing a stubborn hook (looking like an alternating fountain of blood from front and back when it was removed) and ruining a perfectly good fishing weekend. Never missed easy shots on birds or rabbits. Never impaled myself in the leg right next to the femoral artery while stepping over a log with a full pack. Never thought, "just one more step" and had game bust out and head for the next county (multiple times). Never just didn't buy a Mtn. Lion tag only one year, and have a lion sit within 50 yards of me for 30 minutes while I was in a treestand. Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head not messing up on. Guess I am just lucky.
couesmagnet Report post Posted January 21, 2015 I've messed up way to many times to count. Mess ups are fun and usually end up with the same elevated heart rate we are all after anyways regardless of a shot or not. Mess ups are what i learn from the most!!!
