DUG Report post Posted January 16, 2015 Probably 5 to 7 years now that you can't shoot fall turkey with a rifle......My last turkey was with my .270 when rifles were still legal. ETA: fall of 2008 was start of shotgun only fall turkey if I looked at it right.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 16, 2015 I remember well when fall turkey was legal to hunt with .22Mag rim fire and center fire cartridges. Not that I ever did it, but it made longer shots on turkeys easier. That is probably why they quit allowing it. It is easy to stay within 70 yards of a flock of turkeys if you do not pressure them too much. Out of reach of a shotgun, and most archer's range too. yotebuster Report post Posted January 16, 2015 In SD you can shoot spring turkey with a rifle. We sat on a hill above a big flock in a field one year and dumped 3 or 4 big toms with my dads #1 .220 swift before they fisnlly left. They were all head shots, you'd shoot one and the others would go nuts attacking it. Shoot another and so on. They're extremely hard to kill with body shots however. DesertBull Report post Posted January 17, 2015 They made rifle illegal for spring turkey when someone got killed on the Kaibab. If I remember the story right, a numbnuts shot him in the head with a .22 mag. This was years ago and I read it in the AZ Repugnant.
