Whitetail north of Gila bend?

Recommended Posts

A week or so ago I was reading up on some place to bow hunt around my area (buckeye) on the g&f website and it said that they have found coues sheds in unit 41? Anybody have anymore info on this subject? Seen or have heard about this?

I read about some old timers that used to hunt for coues in the hills around gila bend (mainly to the southeast) and saw some pics of a few big coues. That article was probably from 50 years ago though.

I assure you, there are no coues out there. Those pictures are photoshopped. I repeat. No coues.

In the late 1950s, a character named Lynn Cool was frequently mentioned by Arizona Wildlife Sportsman magazine editor Bob Housholder as taking whitetails near Gila Bend. How far "near" might be was anyone's guess. However, in the early 1960s, soon after they widened Interstate 8 through a pass just south of Stanfield, I stopped at a new gas station in the pass and noticed whitetail antlers and a fresh whitetail skin on the wall. The guy at the station said he had shot a couple of whitetails in the hills around there, and had salvaged the antlers off whitetail bucks that had been hit by trucks and cars on the new highway. This was in unit 40, not 41, though.

Thanks Bill. Love hearing about the past. I am 58 and My Dad is 94 in PA. and I get as much history out of Him as I can with out asking to much. Once its gone ,its gone. Then We only resort to reading what We can find. Thank You............BOB!

I pulled this off of the Dept's "where to hunt" description of unit 39

White-tailed deer does not regularly come to mind in the Sonoran Desert; however, there are a few small populations found in unit 40A. I have seen several very nice pickups, too include a pickup that scored roughly 122 1/2. I have known hunting camps from time to time take both a white-tailed and mule deer buck out of the same area.

The trailcam pics I saw were from a WM's trailcam some years ago. He had one on there that he estimated was 130. That thing looked like an eastern whitetail. The mass and tine length was unreal.

I don't know where you guys get your info but there are no whitetails down here. Just scrawny mule deer and a bunch of feral donkeys!
