Coues Question

Recommended Posts

wow you guys crack me up with that whole "don't tell a living soul" thing ha ha ha ha I'd tell Josh, but he won't ever tell me ha ha ha turkey!

OK I won't tell you guys.

I have never hunted coues before, only mulies, but now that I have a couple, I thought I might get after these little guys, they sure are different than those "carp" I been chasing my whole hunting life.

I am going out there to do some elk shed hunting tomorrow, Hopefully I will still see them up on that canyon knoll!

Thanks for the advise guys, this site rules! :P

Shortpants,

Would you relate to us your Rod Serling episode?

RR

A few years back I gave a copy of scouting footage to a ranch owner that was allowing me to access forest land through his ranch. The next year I was told not to come near the place because they were turning into a hunting operation. They took my video and sold to an outfitter who in turn told his clients he shot the video and could get them a shot at the buck of a lifetime. they brought in there clients and in 3 years of trying never killed a deer that would score over 65''. I even had a guy from Utah call my house asking about the video? I don't know who he was or how he got my #. There was some very well known names involved in this fiasco but I won't drop names.

At the same time some so called friends of my hunting partner kept hounding him to tell them where we were seeing all the great bucks we had video taped. Other than showing them the video they were given no info at all. They even took my partner to lunch one day and the harrassment got so bad my friend got up and left. A couple weeks later I received a phone call from the ranch hand asking if I sent a couple of guys down there. They showed up dropping our names but the ranch hand knows me better and sent them packing. That same weekend his fence ended up cut. Since we could no longer access through the ranch do to the big ''operation'' they were running we came in the long way. Well guess who showed up and camped right next to us. None other than those so called friends of my partners.

The ''operation'' killed one 2pt. muley and 2 coues, a spike and a 1x2.

The so called friends killed one spike between 3 tags.

I passed on the same 85'' buck every day just to kill a 80'' on the last eve.

My friend passed many bucks and ate his tag.

Shortpants,

Does seem like the true colors of certain people were revealed through toilet bowl eyeglasses. The amusing irony is the trophies that were killed after all the deception. Thanks for the story. No names or locations were needed to get the value of the scenario.

You can tell from my pics were I hunted two years ago, but its not a secret spot as evidenced by all the other hunters there. Had 5 other groups spotted within the area I hunted. Time to find a new spot.

The fence cutting reminded me of a fence-cutting episode in northern AZ. Some well-known hunters were met at a gate and told of private property and not to tresspass. They cut/let down the fence anyway and shot the buck the ranchers friend was hunting. Charges were filed with Coconino sheriffs, but I do not know of the outcome. This was the during the time of the Navajo Rez/Lacey Act legal episodes a several years ago.

It's sad you can't trust people anymore.

That spot sees it's fair share of pressure. There's somewhere around 30-40 people a year between all the deer hunts that hunt that area. Very few of those people have had the type of success my partner and I have. I'm not bragging I'm making a point. The year before that mess started (when I shot all the video) I only missed 3 weekends from July-Dec. that I was not down there scouting. I would even drive 4 hours, glass 2 hours, drive back home 4 hours and go to work that night. This is the type of effort we put into it. To have people take your video that you worked that hard for and try to pass it off as theirs is a slap in the face not to mention getting booted off the ranch.

The bottom line is for those of you who are constantly trying to move in on other peoples hot spots is just because you figure out the where don't mean you've figured out the how. It takes dedication to kill big coues bucks.

Our hard work did not go without reward. Out of the 7 100+'' bucks we had filmed that year I took our # 3 108'', and my partner took our # 2 which to our surprise turned out to be bigger than our # 1. His buck grossed 122''!

Time is what makes a great hunter.

I can relate to your story, Shorty. <_< I have had the same kind of problems with guys hyjackin' places that I have archery hunted coues deer for 8 - 10 yrs. I even had one "friend" that needed info on a bull for a client he had on an upcoming hunt so he "traded" info I had shared with him to a guy for a bull elk! The guy later aproached me and told me that he found out that I hunt there..... other wise I would have never known about that sorry SOB had betrayed my trust! Anyhow.... I run into that guy and his friends in there all the time now days and it kind bugs me, but it is public land.... what is a guy too do??? <_< I share very little info about coues hunting with anyone, anymore. Everyone wants to capitalize on the efforts of the few........ <_<..... That is why I can't hardly drive my pickup when I go archery deer huntin'...... And often times we even lie about what part of a unit we are huntin', rifle or archery. Seems wrong to have to BS people, but ya just can't be too careful.... You would be surprised how word gets around in the hunting world..... We harvested a 120 inch buck in the October hunt last year.... and of course had to make everyone think we killed it somewhere we didn't... ;) ... Then like 4-5 monthes later a guy I don't even know comes up to me and asks me if we ever found the "dbl mainbeam buck" again that I had taken some family mambers after in the days following us harvesting that toad...... there was only about 6 people that new of that buck! And I though I could trust all of them.... but, somebody said something without thinking..... fortunately the wires are all crossed as to where that buck is located at and he is still alive (unless a lion got him  ).

I say..... Git your a$$ out there and find your own dang "Honey Holes", you Frickin' Lazy, no good Squatters!!

Ahhh... I feel much better now...... :D

After seeing all of the posts on this thread, it should be a "no brainer" to understand the value of having a "secret" spot. In reality, the spot probably is "secret" to a few different people but hey, its nice to have a good spot.

When hunting on public land, it is almost inevitable that sooner or later, you will have someone in your honey hole. I know that for a couple of years, I was hunting in a great spot for Mule Deer. A good friend actually showed me this place. ( I know that goes against what I am saying). After a lot of scouting this place out and determining it was a great spot, I pretty much kept my mouth shut about it and had the place to myself for 3 years. I never saw a flippin' soul in the country. That third year, I heard of an idiot that had been mouthing to people about some country he had found. There were bucks crawling all over the place. Big bucks at that. I also heard of the area this guy was claiming to have seen the deer. Well, that same year, I'll be danged if didn't have 3 different sets of hunting parties hitting MINE AND MY BUDDIES HONEY HOLE. It goes to show you that word spreads quickly and people will move in.

I just don't understand how people can just run their mouth to Joe Schmo on the street. I guess it must just be the whole gotta prove I know somethin' about huntin' syndrome.

Doesn't make sense to me. But then again, this is my own opinion and my own thoughts.

The deer will only stay where they are if you don't get drawn. Based on a lot of experience! The coues deer in my honeyholes have access to G&F websites I'm pretty sure.

No.... there just a LOT easier to find when you are not actually looking for them.....  At least that is what I have found......

Very well said by shortpants and CnS. Examples of why it is so important to keep our mouths zipped over honey holes!
