Figured they are starting or getting ready to rut. it's cold... they gotta eat. if they hear rabbit rabbit rabbit.... they'll be cautious and may hang up to watch and see if it is the real deal. try bird distress and start with the volume low for a couple minutes. interrogation howl usually works for me this time of year. a long howl or 2 with a bark in between. I start almost all my sets with 1 if I'm after yotes. people are everywhere right now too with all the archery deer and pig hunters, this can keep them cautious as well. if you were up somewhere on the rim or winslow they would probably come screemin in to the call. I bet standman is probably slayin the fox up in his neck of the woods. next month they'll be pairing up for mating. James Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
BeardownAZ Report post Posted January 2, 2015 I do think alot of areas are just beat up right now as well. Everywhere i have gone looks like a million people have been through. So I think between deer, quail and now the archey and pig, they are cautious for sure. Ive been thinking about trying up high to get on some dogs that probably dont get called much if ever. Always looking for new areas. I can think of a ton of areas(deer and elk hunting spots) Id bet my retirement on that never get called but it seems like a long drive just for coyotes, predators. azcatter Report post Posted January 3, 2015 I called tell noon and only got 2 one came to wood pecker the uther came to ground hog distress today have not got any on rabbit sounds except baby cottontail in the last 2 weeks all the ground has been hunted hard not getting anything past 9 in the morning when every one starts driving around unless I am near town where they are not hunted mutch they are starting to pair up down here and challenge howl at each uther at night so howling will start working good for males that are looking for a date Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

452b264 Report post Posted January 6, 2015 Dont over call your stand. Ever hear how elk hunters over use of the cow call? A good example is this past weekend my son and I were out rabbit hunting, and a coyote hunter let out a challenge call and was answered right away. He proceeded with about 20 more challenge calls. He should have only used one or two and sit quietly waiting for up to 20 min.He was unsuccessful the entire day. My son was stalking a rabbit and walked up on two coyotes bedded under a mesquite tree, he was within 45 yards of them before the pair noticed him, and there is coyote sign every where I walk in this area. I also found a bobcats toilet. When using rabbit sounds try to call softer with more time between each series. Howling also works well later in the season when used properly. HunterB17 Report post Posted January 20, 2015 Called in two coyotes today with Lightning Jack. One came from behind, and I didn't even know it was there until I heard it's footsteps 10 yards to my left. The second one came in around 11:00 to the same call around minute 8:00.
