Something you might find while shed hunting

Recommended Posts

Amanda, I have seen a number of banded rock rattlesnakes along the Gila river in NM. They do have a pretty pattern. They are pretty small compared to a diamondback and can be quite hard to see, but most of them I have run into rattle good and give you a good warning.

This little guy was hanging out next to us on our bear hunt in unit 24A. We were sitting on a hillside glassing for about 2 hours at the end of day. My partner Mike decided to move around the hill to a different vantage point and low and behold he yelled out and froze up. He was about 3 feet in length, just sitting in the sun no more than 20 feet from us the whole time. The rancher Ken and I forgot the others name tells us there everywhere out there. He kills 'em every time he see's one. Puts a toll on his cattle dogs.

Keith,

Thanks for your reply with the BTA link that was most interesting and exactly what I saw. They were both quite large sakes and it looked a little rough to be a courtship ritual....

BTW I really Love this site...!!

Wade

If you run into Coosefan (Jimbo) ask him to show you what a snake can do to a finger. When he was a teenager, instead of going to the movies or party's, he and a few of his friends would go snake hunt'n and a lot of the time he would take his date with him. Sometimes he would bring a snake home and put them on the counter and let them slither around until he got the message that I didn't want them in the house, then he would take them back out to the desert and let them go. He doesn't pick them up like he used to after the doctor told him that he couldn't get the anti venom again. I don't know if that is true but it did put some fear in him. I think his mother must have dropped him when he was little. Jim

Well Jimbo I don't want you to feel left out, I think she dropped your brothers and sister too. In her defense though I think it was just when she was drunk.

Now that is funny right there, I don't care who you are.  Jim

I can tell you first hand he's got a new attitude towards snakes Pops. Last year on our deer hunt he would make me hike in front through all that tall grass. He kept sayin ''I can't get bit again cause I can't get the anti-venom.'' I'm just glad that snake you let me step on (the ''biggest snake'' you've ever seen) wasn't poisenous.

When I was seventeen I was backpacking down Chevelon Creek - blazing the trail. Heard the rattle about 3 feet away. It was the first time in my life that I had ever heard that noise, and within a mili-second, I was in mid air (with 50 pounds on my back), I had the snake pinpointed, and was scanning for others, looking for a place to land. Amazing!

Let someone else lead after that.

Mike
