Bullets

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any experience with Berger bullets and/or HSM ammo. Wondering about accuracy and performance. Thinking of trying it in my 300 ultra mag.

Bergers work best when tuned for your rifle. If that HSM stuff shoots good in your rifle though there is not a better bullet made.

Bergers work great for the most part. I haven't heard of to many failures but there are some with the big boy guns. My buddy shoots the 30-378. One big gun pushing I think a 210', can't remember. But up to 3200 fps. The Connecticut energy is the same with my 140 grain .270 at 200 yards when his hit 700 yards. He smacked a bull elk strait to the ground at 700 yard. It got back up and slowly walked off. He couldn't connect with it limping off. We followed the small blood trail for about 1/2 mile before it stop. He he hit it behind the shoulder and out the other side, so good placement, but we lost it. After some investigation somebody on YouTube had the same thing and recovered there bullet. Bregers are design to Hydro shock and expand within a couple inches once it hits the target. Apparently the guys on the video didn't do that it almost look like a full metal jacket. Then I read on a form somewhere else that a guy have the same problem when shooting far distance and called the factory and what he said they claim to say, was 1 out of every 100 with in 500 yards will not perform right when hitting the target. 1 out of every 20 out to 700 and beyond will not perform right when it hits the target. But that's what he said and we are led to believe only his word. Mao we think we might of been that 1 out of 20 bullet. On paper they always fly great. But the Long Range Accurbond are the complete opposite. The bullet works best on impact the farther the shot, and it's been known to not perform right while shooting close and fast. I shoot the 140 grain accurbond and it has performed well and I haven't heard any bad news about it close and far. But a less BC compared to Accurbond LR and Berger. But at last would I still buy Berger bullets for your rifle. I probably would. That or the Nosler accubond for me

Berger has a threshold for minimum velocity they suggest for proper bullet performance on game, something like 1500-1600fps. With a .300RUM, that threshold will not be reached for a LONG way out there.

I know the accuracy of Berger bullets is phenominal once you get them tuned. My deer this year went all of 10 yards when hit with a .257 115 Berger VLD.

I shoot the 210 Berger VLD Hunting and 215 Hybrids in my .300RUM, both right about 3150fps. Hit like a sledgehammer at 1300+ yards on steel.

I will also be shooting the 140 Berger VLDs or Hybrids in my new 6.5 SLR.

I shoot the 185's out of my 300 win mag. Shot several deer with it here in GA this fall, from less than 20 yards to just over 300. Not a single one took a step.

I shot some HSM ammo in my 223 last year. Worked fine.

I keep saying the trick for bergers to work every time is to hit bone, especially in these big magnum cartridges and heavy bullets. This is what I try to do and haven't had a failure or animal run off yet.

I shoot 210 grain hunting VLDs with 91 grains of Retumbo out of my 300 RUM, and consistently shoot sub 1inch groups at 200 yards. My 10 year old son shot his coues buck in its bed with it in October at 330 yards. It never got out of its bed.

I bought a couple of boxes this year in 7mm Rem Mag, 168's I think. I sighted my gun in a year before with some Barnes so this year I put a target out at 200 yards and took two shots from a cold barrel.

They were about 3/4" apart so I called it good. Never did see a buck on my hunt though. From what I have read people either love or hate the hybrids for hunting so I'm not sure I would choose them over a straight Berger Hunting bullet, even if I thought I really, really, really needed the higher BC. Especially after some of the stories I have read.

Just google them and you'll see what I mean. I don't like any uncertainties when I hunting and I need to have 100% confidence in my equipment.

Also, without meaning to hijack the thread, I picked up several boxes of 30 caliber 210 grain hunting VLDs several months back. I have more than I need. If anyone needs to buy a box, let me know. Located in Queen Creek.

I have berger vld 168 for my 7mm rem mag. I started using nosler accubond long range 168 recently and its flatter shooting. I like the accubond, I have heard issues with berger vld in animals from friends. I have not had any issues. I moved to nossler for balistic advantage as well as the performance in animals.

I really love the Berger 168 VLD out of my .300 wby mag... we have recovered 19 out 19 animals with that combo... at about 3200 fps...
