kidso Report post Posted December 28, 2014 Going to poke around on some state trust land tomorrow morning off the 60 in Apache junction for some metro javelina. Just going out in the field from 7-10am if anyone wants to join me. No honey holes or guarantees, just exploring a new area close to town. Went out yesterday afternoon for 3 hours and found several bedding areas, but the freshest sign was about a week or two old. Also, found some old homeless or illegal campsites, which is why I wouldn't mind some company if I ran into any trouble. PM me with your cell number if you want to join up in the morning. kidso Report post Posted December 28, 2014 Try not to hunt on the Sabbath, unless it is for a serious odds draw tag. Spent the day in church and with family. Tomorrow morning will be different story! Come on, I will even take a teenager with me who is off for winter break!
Maverick351 Report post Posted December 29, 2014 Kidso if I didn't work at 930 I'd go in a heartbeat.
kidso Report post Posted December 30, 2014 Walked into two piggies. One charged me head on and stopped at 10 yards behind a creosote. I drew back and he jogged along as if to circle me. I followed him with my arrow, turning my body as he circled me for about 180 degrees waiting for him to stop before releasing. I grunted a few times while he did this, but he never stopped and I never shot. The second pig bolted away from me. Will try it once more tomorrow morning. Big Browns Report post Posted December 30, 2014 Great job Keith! Seeing a pig in a metro unit is rare. Way to go buddy!
DesertBull Report post Posted December 30, 2014 We see them almost every time we go out but they are so skitish and nervous its hard to get within 100 yards of them before they bail. Where they are is very rocky and loud no matter how slow you try to stalk. Saw a good muley buck yesterday. I took an old pair of sneakers and glued some carpet to the bottoms and stuck them in my pack last week. Yesterday we went out and found them but they got away from from us before we could put on the stalk. Went out this morning and could not find them. Try again tomorrow if the weather permits. Call call call and if that dont work then grunts and squeals I promise you can bring them to you from that 100yard point rather than spooking with walking noise. a virgin herd is hard to find BUT different tactics than usual will work on most. pigs are HIGHLY PROTECTIVE! Make is sound like your tortchuring a piglet and you will draw blood if they dont get ya 1st. good luck! I have no desire to steal anyones spot so if ya want help trying to coax them in let me know and I will see if I can lend a hand.
DesertBull Report post Posted December 31, 2014 My friend tried calling them once. They did not respond. I have called in herds many times, but sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.
kidso Report post Posted December 31, 2014 I am also leary of calling for pigs. I have called them in before unexpectedly while calling for bear, but have never called in pigs purposely, unless I had already shot one and they were milling about crazily. The couple of times I tried it "to close the gap" by calling before a shot resulted in the pigs getting out of Dodge, instead of coming in closer. Go figure... Time to go out in the rain and see if I can find a pig pile getting wet.

More often than not, it just makes them run faster. I find that if they haven't smelled you yet, but only heard or seen you, then it's more likely to work. Nothing more irritating that guys wandering around the desert blind cold calling. They aren't stupid animals and get educated pretty quickly.

Just fyi ugly dude I get about 90% full blown charges then I turn to herd vocals and even have them bed down by me.. its not all about screaming the loudest piece of plastic you buy off a shelf! But thanks to those who wont take the time to learn their vocals, like those who just blow elk out with bad calling, it makes javelina a bit easier for me. L.O.L. urban and high traffic pigs in center of populated areas with every body and brother calling for yotes are a bit difficult but positively callable you just cant go at them like they are yotes, fox, bear etc.. PIGS ARE HIGHLY VOCAL!
hoghntr Report post Posted December 31, 2014 To elaborate.. kidso if ya want a lesson in calling pigs I will trade it for shooting a piggy after you of course. I promise it is know where near the same as your bear calling. they are protective and territorial so make yourself a tresspassing boar. goood luck with the wet pig pile today I'm gonna go look for same thing
