Song dog double

Recommended Posts

This past Sunday I decided to do a few stands while my dad was doing some other business. He dropped me off and I called a good buddy, John, and asked if some of this good looking land to the east was huntable or not and he said it was state land. I figured I would do a stand or two then start back west to my dad’s location, doing stands along the way. I hopped the fence then found a good looking spot at set up. I used a call that was suggested to me by a friend a couple nights before while giving me some pointers. Now, you must understand that I have done 15+ stands with my new Foxpro Firestorm and haven’t had any success, so I was willing to try anything.

This is the setup (red circle is location of caller):

I had my eyes to the left and began to look towards the caller right as a dog runs in and nearly bites the Foxjack decoy only 1.5 minutes into the set! I quickly put the dog down with my Benelli M1 at about 30 yards and continued calling to no avail. I was ecstatic! My first digs with a shotgun, first dog with the Foxpro, and first solo dog! And that morning I had grabbed a sling that is normally used for ducks but I thought it could work for a dog if I got one (it was very wishful thinking at the time!). And sure enough, it worked quite well with the female. I moved on the next stand.

I was about 400 yards from my last set and found a very similar spot that I decided to set up in, Once again I used the call that was suggested to me, and not 2 minutes in, a big male is coming in from the right! He investigates the call and as soon as he was clear of the call, he hit the dirt. And this coyote was visibly bigger even without the 2 dogs side by side. I did 1 more stand but then the weight of walking with the 2 dogs, a shotgun, and my calling bag was too much and called my dad to come pick me up. It was a morning to remember!

My view after the shot:

I was using 2s. They are some of my dads OLD Nitro 2s that he used to shoot ducks with before they had to switch to steel. So i am just using them up until i need to buy a new box

Nice. I am 31, hunted all my life and haven't ever called in and killed a double solo. You are off to quite a start sir.
