Determining the value of guns and reloading equipment.

Recommended Posts

When we buy a car, we can use KBB as a guide for the car's value, but how does someone who is not knowledgeable know the current market value of guns and reloading equipment?

It's worth what someone will pay for it. I always like to look stuff up and see what it is worth new and then go from there. I don't know of any publication like KBB for guns and reloading. You can look up a lot of things on ebay and see what they went for to get an idea. Guns are difficult, most guns don't loose value and will get 90 percent or more what they were new unless they are worn out or abused.

Gun digest is a good resource for gun values. Gunbroker.com is also a source you can use. Look for what guns are being sold for not what they're listed for and that should give you a good idea. As far as reloading equipment goes, it sells for about what anything else sells for... I've seen it go for around 50-60% of its new value?

Theres actually a book called "the blue book of gun values" I believe its by a guy named Barry Fain but not sure. Had one a long time ago. Maybe its still being published and kept up to date. You can probably look it up on line.

I buy, sell and trade a few firearms each year, culled from probably hundreds advertised on web sites. I have an on-line subscription to the Blue Book of Gun Values. They update their information as it becomes available. They also have an app for cell phones and tablets, although I don't have one since I rarely buy guns at gun shows or from retail outlets anymore. If you're just selling or buying one or two a year, it's probably not worth the cost of a subscription unless you are into arcane or unusual variations.

With respect to reloading stuff, I am willing to pay up to 60-70 percent of new for items that are lightly used or like new. Items that have had lots of use, but which are still serviceable go for about half of new. Of course, if you want a set of dies for a .223 Minotaur or a .480 Tyranosuarus, you are probably at the mercy of the seller...
