My Rights As An American Report post Posted December 18, 2014 I am looking to acquire an AR in trade and I know little about which makers are good and which to avoid. I am hoping to pick someone's brain about ARs. Is there someone with quite a bit of knowledge on the site who could help me value out an AR? Please PM me! Thanks a ton! Zeke-BE Report post Posted December 18, 2014 If you know your stuff and like to build then do it. But if you are buying one to shoot and you want a good one without problems buy the ARs that are a 1000 and up. Don't settle for anything less. I bought the Colt 6940 and love it. My brother always bought the 600-700 dollar ARs and always regretted it. If your willing to pay 700 dollars just wait and save a little longer and buy or build with better products.

lancetkenyon Report post Posted December 19, 2014 A lot depends on intended use. Protection/throw in the truck gun? I would not want a $1K+ heavy varmint gun bouncing around all the time. That is why I have a basic Bushmaster carbine with an aluminum lower. It rides to remote sites with me all the time. Varmint/small game hunting/target? A good medium weight 20-24" match barrel would be good. But then you are getting up into the $1K++ range. I have two of these types. Medium game hunting? You need to step up to an AR10 type, with the .308 length cartridges. .308, .260, .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Whisper/Blackout, etc. Best of both worlds? Buy a good quality carbine and add a small scope or red dot (or open sights), and a separate varmint match barreled upper w. good scope and swap as needed. My Rights As An American Report post Posted December 19, 2014 Excellent advice from everyone. Thank you! Now I am just waiting to hear back from the other person for possible trade. Thanks again. These guns have so many customizable options it is difficult to get my arms around it all!

When I was looking to get an AR I googled the heck out of it and also went on AR15.Com and ended up getting a Colt LE6920 and have not regretted it, as a matter of fact it seemed that everyone always compared the other brands to the Colt models. I under stand it there is now a newer model with a lightweight barrel. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/colt-ar-15-5-56nato-16-carbine-pencil-barrel.html
lancetkenyon Report post Posted December 19, 2014 This rifle now wears a different scope, but you get the drift. It is a true 1/4 MOA gun.
Lucafu1 Report post Posted December 19, 2014 ARs under a 1000$ are fine. Pick a good brand and you will be ok (S&W, DPMS, BUSHMASTER, COLT, ASA,PSA ........). Ive never had a problem with any of them, keep them clean and well lubricated and you will be ok. I would stay away from the cheaper models that have carbon fiber lowers or pencil barrels. AverageJoe Report post Posted December 19, 2014 Honestly most are good. You can get a cheaper one that is fine as well. Stay away from carbon fiber and pencil barrels as mentioned above. Depending on use a 16" barrel is more than fine. Bushmaster and DPMS get a lot of hate with the online tacticool crowd but having owned and shot both they are fine and do the same as the expensive ones.
