MRL1984 Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I have a piranha and barracuda. The piranha uses the smaller blades, smaller overall and lighter than the handle of the box cutter. The barracuda has the option of filet, saw, and knife. I haven't used it yet other than the sawesome on a circle bone. Went well, I've heard the filet blade is a bit stiff for getting the bend to get back straps off. The blades break under heavy pressure, I have not broke one in normal use only from getting carried away. I chose to go with both over time. The piranha is good, but i still had to have a filet knife and saw. I have taken the saw out of my pack now. I still have to try out the filet blade. Clear as mud right? lancetkenyon Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I, too, have the Piranta and a Barracuta. The Barracuta is a filet knife, and works fantastic for elk where you need a longer blade to get down into the meat for backstraps and tenderloins. The Piranta works awesome on deer and javalina. Both are very light and so easy to change a blade when they start to dull. Replacement blades are cheap so you will get spoiled and change blades to have a scalpel edge at all times. I have been using them for butchering at home too.
AZbowhntr Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I have the Piranta and love it. For some reason I thought that they were coming out with one that has a little longer blade but basically the same as the Piranta.

Viper Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I have the Piranta. It works great, but I usually break a blade or two processing deer or elk. I also have the Outdoor Edge version of this. It's bigger and more sturdy. The blade changes are easier and safer. I used it on my deer this year and like it better than the Piranta. It is very sharp as well....I cut half way through the tip of my finger
bigorange Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I have the Piranta and love it...the Baracuta bone saw is on my Christmas list this year and can also use the fillet blades and a blade that is similar to Piranta but is longer and I've heard a little stronger for larger game. Coues assassin Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I was looking at the piranta and saw it came with 12 replaceable blades. So when one get dull do you just toss it or can you keep sharpening? How many times do you change the blade on say just gutting and skinning a deer

AZHUNTER05 Report post Posted December 9, 2014 Outdoor edge makes one that looks good same concept as the Havalon and i am thinking about getting one the one outdoor edge knife i own i like it take a look at it looks like a good all around knife +1 for the outdoor edge! I have both and the outdoor edge is twice the knife that the havalon's are. The havalon blades break easy and you have to replace them quite often, plus it's scary changing the blades! The outdoor edge has stronger blades and is built more like a traditional folding knife. The blades are much more safe to change also.
bo5953 Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I too have the Piranta. I actually stopped using it for awhile because I would constantly break blades while gutting and skinning (that and poking my fingers and hands with the tip). It is a little unnerving when you don't know where the other half of the blade is inside an animal you are not done with yet. I was on a recent trip in WY and shot a deer and used a buddies Piranta but he had the #22XT carbon blade. It was much better and safer than the #60 blades with the sharp point. One blade and I was able to process an entire deer using gutless method. Even de-boned it with the same blade. I liked it so much I came home and bought a 100 pack of the blades for $35 and gave them to my friends that own the Piranta. I do like the look of the Outdoor Edge though. I will probably give it a try at some point.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted December 9, 2014 I sell the Havalon knives in the CouesWhitetail store. The piranta edge is the one with the orange handle. It's a great knife and the one most people use. You can get the 60xt blades or the 22xt blades (which are blunt-tipped to help with caping a head so you are less likely to make a hole in the hide). The piranta comes in a few different models, but the orange handled one is most popular. http://store.coueswhitetail.com/categories/Knives/ The baracuta blaze is Havalon's response to hunters wanting a little bit larger knife for skinning/deboning. http://store.coueswhitetail.com/havalon-baracuta-blaze/

How many times do you change the blade on say just gutting and skinning a deer If you discard it, please make sure you don't just toss it on the hillside somewhere so somebody doesn't end up sitting on it while glassing! When you change the blades, you can place the used blade into the sleeve that the new blade came out of and pack it home to dispose of. But someone here in the forum said that you can indeed resharpen the blades and they take an edge super quick. So you might just do that!
