elpepe25 Report post Posted March 22, 2007 I got my girl friend a Mathews Ignition 4 Xmas, It'll go up to 50 Lbs. She wants to hunt this fall. I was wondering what arrow-broadhead combination will help her have a successful hunt-pass through and clean kill an such low poundage. any input is apprieciated thank you
DesertBull Report post Posted March 22, 2007 50 lbs is plenty. Just get an arrow / BH combo that flies straight and have fun. I like the slick tricks broadheads but have always liked the good old fashioned NAP Thunderheads too. Muzzys are good too. You should probably avoid mechanical heads though. I like Beman and Easton arrows, but all of the popular ones are just as good. Main thing is to get it matched to the draw weight and draw length of the shooter. mattys281 Report post Posted March 22, 2007 My GF is shooting around 43 lbs. on her Spyder. I got her set up w/ the PSE Carbon Force Predator 100's & Thunderhead 100 broadheads. She hasn't stuck anything w/ it yet, but that set-up shoots good for her & I'm a big fan of those arrows. They're pretty tough. I shoot the NAP Nitron 100s for my broadheads. They're short profile w/ a 1 1/16 cutting diameter. They shoot real well.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted March 22, 2007 A friend's wife is shooting 43 lbs with her Mathews Black Max. Passed through a bull a couple years ago with an 85gr Thunderhead on a carbon shaft. I like the looks of the 100 gr Razorcaps or NAP's new Hellrazor, both cut-on-impact heads for better penetration. Doug~RR
elpepe25 Report post Posted March 22, 2007 so the 85 grn 3 blade thunder head will work, i was worried about penetration
AZP&Y Report post Posted March 22, 2007 Elpep25, Equally if not more important will be shot placement .... If she hits an elk, deer etc in the wrong area it could be a long day of tracking. Here is a fantastic guide to the vitals and where they are located. That way you can be doing high 5's instead of 10 hours' of tracking - only to be let down in the end... http://www.bowsite2.com/nbefstore/product1...;Product_ID=174 Good Luck- AzP&Y
mattys281 Report post Posted March 22, 2007 Those heads have been around a long time for a reason. They work. As long as she shoots a decent weight arrow you should be fine. Just keep in mind when selecting arrows that light arrows shed energy faster than heavier ones do, which is a lot more important the further down range you shoot. This is an important consideration in choosing arrows for everybody, but even more so with women & youth who tend to shoot lighter draw weights w/ shorter draw lengths. What is her draw length anyway? I've heard that given the same draw weight, you'll lose around 10 fps for each inch of draw length. Haven't tested that though & I'm sure it varies on different models. The principle is that the longer the arrow is on the string, the more energy is transferred, which is on reason why "speed" bows usually have shorter brace heights (ex. X-force at 6"). Also, you'll find that the muscles used to pull her bow will strengthen very quickly. Even if she's starting at the low end of the weight range, as long as she at least pulls the bow a few times everyday she should be able to add a 1/2 turn or so every other week, which'll have her at that 50# mark well before early archery deer. At that weight it should shove a 300 grain arrow w/ some decent speed. The Carbon Force 100's I mentioned before are 6.6 grains/in. At 25" with the insert, nock, fletchings & a 100grn. point head would tip the scale at right around 300 grains.
elpepe25 Report post Posted March 22, 2007 she'll have no prob w/ shot placement. the reason i ask about the thunder heads is that traditional folks and light poundage folk seem to favor the 2 blades for better penetration Specs are as follows Mathews Ignition will be 50# 25 in draw Gold tip 35 55 expeditions ive got loads of the Thunder head 85s cant wait to be gettin and givin the high fives later this year if theres any other cosiderations i should know about.........hit me up i really apprieciate all the info thanks Rob
coueshunter84 Report post Posted March 23, 2007 My wife shoots a Bowtec Stalker lite. She pulls about 50 lbs. I CHose 2 blade heads beacuse of the light arrows 278gr total. She chose the Steel Force Titaniums 85gr. beacuse they matched the color of her bow. LOL.. They have a blue tint to them. The bow has taken 2 javalina now. Both complete pass threws. one at 30 yards. Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted March 23, 2007 Thunderheads are always a great choice. However, I do favor the cut on impact heads for light draw weights..... esp. the NAP products like the Razorback. Good luck.
Shane Burleson Report post Posted April 6, 2007 Those goldtip 3555's tipped with Steel Force two bladed 75s or 85s will be awesome for both pass through penetration and great flight. These broadheads are razor sharp right out of the package too.
