17wsm for javalina?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if the 17wsm is legal for javalina. It has almost twice the energy at 200yrds as the 22mag and I know the 22mag is legal for javalina.

it is not. i talked to a game warden about this last pig season to see if a buddy of mine could use my 17 wsm to shoot his pig. the game warden said no because it is a 17 caliber, although he aggreed it would be plenty for a pig, the regs say nothing under 22 caliber

You have to realize a lot of these rules are pretty old. The times haven't caught up to modern cartridges. 17wsm is how old now? There are lots of other cartridges created in the 2000s as well.

This caliber has been on the market for almost two years now.You would think they could keep up with the times better than that. But it is a government run agency were talking about.

Twowindy instead of complaining about how out of touch AZGFD is why don't you go to a meeting and do something about it.

.The 17WSM has almost twice the energy as the 22mag.I have been to meetings but not on this subject. The problem with talking to game and fish is you never get the same answer twice.I have talked to a few officers on the use of salt and never got the same answer from two of them.I started this post to see if anyone had heard anything about useing the17 on javalina.I realy didn't mean to bash the game and fish.sorry if I upset anyone

no worries. we all know change in government goes slow. the whole salt/baiting thing is really bad, there are so many different answers floating around. best advice is to just proceed with caution.

as far as the caliber changing goes, not sure how often they look into this matter, but if i remember correctly, the weapon types for turkey was recently changed? last couple of years maybe?

So getting the 17WSM added may be just a matter of a few e-mails from folks to put it in motion. Not saying it'll happen quick but eventually they will take down the 22 caliber or larger restriction (which across the nation is usually a common rule)

It looks like for Javelina general 5mm or .22 magnum rimfire is legal but .17 magnum and 22 rimfire is now. I don't see any game that 17 magnum is legal for the take. As far as air rifle goes, they need to be precharged and .35 caliber or larger.

Change doesn't happen if no one speaks up. If you have ballastics charts or research I would submit that to them. I'll even send them an e-mail as well and voice your opinion. I think we should all have options on what is legal and not, and if its a humane way of putting down an animal then why not. If you say the 17WSM is a candidate for taking down a javelina, then I am with you on making progress.

These rules are only up for official review and revision every four years. If you were talking to someone about the issue outside of that official process, then there's nothing they could have done to help you. It's state law that causes the delay, not the Department. Under the process outlined by the Republican-led Legislature (whose members generally are opposed to government regulation) the executive agencies can only change their rules every so often. It's viewed as pro-business because it allows businesses to plan and invest in a predicable environment (not really applicable with Game and Fish, but all executive agencies get pulled in). The problem is that sometimes agencies need to be able to react to new developments. Putting a bunch of roadblocks in their way makes that difficult. Blame your elected official, not the Department. And because the process is so slow, there is no way they could react to a new caliber that had only been on the market for two years.

Do they even make 17WSM in anything other than explosive varmint ammo? Yes, you're moving faster than a 22 mag (which in my opinion is also underpowered for javelina, but that's just my opinion), but you only have about 20% more energy, and your prospect for actual penetration is going to be lower than with many of the 22 mag options. I've seen javelina take explosive varmint bullets from 223 rifles that run off never to be found because the bullet blew up on the shoulder and never made it into the body cavity. They likely died, but were never recovered.

Should show these critters the respect their teeth deserve. :) use a bigger bullet cuz having them latched on your leg sucks and losing them to slow painful death sucks also. 22 mag insane!

I have shot over a dozen javalina In my lifetime and have skinned tons of them in my taxidermy shop. They have very thin skin.I have shot them with rifles muzzleloaders and bows.I have never shot one I didn't recover. It is all about shot placement just like any other animal.

twowindy, I have no doubt that you are capable of placing your shot in an area where a 25gr 17cal bullet will be effective. I wonder, if the G&F allows that round, would all of the hunters using that round be effective as you. Then again, I do not have a lot of faith in others using handguns without adequate handgun proficiency.

I know when I was growing up on a ranch in Montana, I'd use a 22lr to drop a 2yr old steer when it came time to butcher a beef.
