AZGFD Commission changing elk structures!!!

Recommended Posts

The commission voted to change some seasons without any study. The law of unintended consequences will apply. Do you know that crossbow and archery equipment is allowed in a muzzleloader hunt? The commissioner that likes muzzleloaders stuck that in despite the objections of staff and the bowhunters president. It is supposed to be a test but he will be the next Chairman. Hunters you should be watching these meetings on the web cams or go to meetings or quit complaining.

As one of the guilty ones not attending the meetings I will wait for the regs to come out. Pick my hunts, and go hunting without complaint. It sounds like g&f is gonna do what they want. What I would like to know is if the overall population of elk in AZ is increasing or decreasing? Anybody have any links for such information?

Does anyone have a link? The pre-archery muzzleloader sounds like a good tag for the bow hunters. Let the muzzy guys chase them when they are pre-rut..

Alot of the muzzle hunts were in peak rut after archery hunts already. And honestly the archery hunts have been moved earlier over the years and it's almost to the point some seasons seemed not rutting at all. End of the day g&f know best just ask them!!

I guess I don't understand your complaint? Why is it a problem that a guy can bowhunt on a muzzy tag? You've been able to do that for years?

Late archery are some tough hunts but doable if u put in the time. It will only make it a little tougher for the rut hunts to be drawn but a better rate of hunters in the field during those hunts. Wish it were a perfect situation but it is not. Still love it!

i would expect in increase in late archery and decrease general hunts and/or the early hunts since that way the elk populations go up since there will be less success, yet they will still earn the same amount of cash since the tags are the same overall.

Explorer I can tell you from all my extensive hunting and scouting experiences that Unit #27 now has about 50% of the elk population that it formerly had at its peak about 1999. The additional wolf reintroductions that we are now hearing will occur soon will result in a shift to other units as more desirable hunting targets. Many cow hunters have complained to me the last two years that they do not even see hardly a cow on their hunts!

Bob the turkey population seemed to be increasing nicely in my opinion up to the Wallow Fire. Thought it would explode after the fire, but doesn't seemed to have gotten better surprisingly. Only thing I can guess is the high predator population now is suppressing what should be an increasing population post-fire. Also, I believe we lost almost all of the turkey reproduction during the year of the fire due to the timing of it.
