azhuntnut Report post Posted March 20, 2007 Has anybody ever tried making a food plot? I was looking at the Biologic website and they have a new product called Hotspot that allows you to plant seed around your treestand or blind that will help attract more deer. I think I am going to try to put some down about a 1000 square foot area on my property up north just to see if it works or not. Last weekend I dropped off some hay, two fifty pound bags of salt, two homemade corn feeders, and fifty pounds of birdseed. I figured if I add the food plot, I should be able to get some real good pictures of the wildlife in my area. David
GameHauler Report post Posted March 20, 2007 I've wondered about that myself but i think since most of that stuff is made back east that our soil will not do well. Also most of the food plots you see are on private land. It is not legal to plant something on forest service land. Mike

Mike I believe anything like that on State or Federal land is considered littering....water trofs, feeders, planting, or even treestands (if they wanted to press the issue). You can do anything you want on private property though...... be nice to own 100 acres in the middle of nowhere!!
GameHauler Report post Posted March 20, 2007 As far as tree stands go you can put them up but you can not use a nail of any sort. The forest service Made a law way back when, when the lumber industry was going strong. The law was to stop what is called SPIKING. The tree hugers back then would drive a spike into trees to damage the loggers equipment. So you may use steps or a means of securing you stand as long as it can be removed (unscrewed) Not trying to hijack this thread just thought it kind of fit Mike

Well I don't see the rangers walking through the forrest telling everybody to remove there salt, deer kane, and all of the other attractants available out there. If it works on my property, then I will try it out in the middle of the forrest. David
GameHauler Report post Posted March 20, 2007 It has to do with "Non native vegatation" When we have forest fires all the trucks that come to fight the fire from other states or regions have to go thru a wash down before they go into the wood to remove any Non native seeds or vegitation and or bugs. That is why it is not legal, salt, kane, so on do not live. Good luck with it on your property. Mike

mattys281 Report post Posted March 20, 2007 I recently met a guy who is a sales rep for Hard Hunter Deer Mineral. He's not a professional salesman, he just deals in this stuff as a side business, from what I understand. It's supposed to be formulated for deer in the southwest and he says that it works really well. That's why he sells it, personal belief in the product. If you'd like, you can pm me & leave a e-mail address, & I'll forward a copy of the flyer to you.
