I agree to a extent. My brother and I drew archery bull tags in either 2 quality units and I have two friends that also drew. the only difference is I had a cow tag last year and they haven't been drawn for 10 years. But saying that there are a lot of people out there that put in for once in a lifetime tags every year and then complain about not being drawn. I drew an antelope tag last year but it was muzzleloader. I am now putting in for archery only. I drew an early rifle tag in 03 and a strip tag in 03. I haven't put in for either since. That was a total once in a million year. Now I just plan on maybe drawing a tag every few years. But I have been very lucky. I just think that you choose your own game and play the odds. But don't complain if you are applying for these crazy tags. my wife thinks that this is normal to draw tags every year. But we did draw 36b late hunt last year so I know I have nothing to complain about. i will continue to play odds. It's like a friend of mine (no lie) who when we were in Laughlin 13 years ago started playing roulette with 100 dollars and by the end of a six hour turn he walked out with $13,000.00. Don't ask me why I didn't follow his bets. They were fricken crazy. After seeing that I believe anything is possible.......... just remember we are all Redneks just looking for a vacation

Well said. :)

One solution may be to determine quality hunts and prevent people from putting in for 5 years after being drawn for only these hunts, then one could put in for the "non-quality" hunts or cow tags. Or allow bounus points to still be purchased during the 5 year waiting period. Then the G&F don't lose the $7.50.

Redman

Not sure if 5 years is the right number but I do think there is credibility in viewing quality hunts as a hunt that requires a waiting period if you draw. Other states use this idea. It would be good to study their results.

Fairness is a good thing.

Hey Johnnie, you guys weren't the guys I was talking about..........but you do fit the discription  :P You guys have done very well and thats awesome and you got it right..." I just think that you choose your own game and play the odds. But don't complain if you are applying for these crazy tags." Most guys that have ALOT of points are only putting in for the top hunts and usually only put in a 1st and 2nd choice.......so they already know they are making it harder for themselves, when they could draw a tag if they just choose an easier to draw hunt. It's the guys drawing the Early rifle and top archery units for Bulls and Rifle 'lope tags on back to back years or every other year that gets to me! That is when I think it's excessive and not fair to the guys that never draw and why I would like to see a waiting period on the quality hunts. "just remember we are all Redneks just looking for a vacation" :P that's a goodun' JIM>

John, i have been putting in for 36b december for 11 years... always end up with november 36b ( still not bad to me at all)

i would not say i have had a "quality" tag, i have had 2 juniors only cow elk tags one in 27, the other in 1, one late unit 1 rifle bull tag ( the first year i ever put in, and my first big game hunt ever) and i think 10 or 11 straight deer tags... 2 or 3 in 34a in either october or november, one muley hunt in 28, and the rest october or november hunts in 36b. i would love to draw a real quality tag. my dads dream is to call in a bull screamin his head off and pissin everywhere to 20 yards and shoot him with his bow! i want to do that to!

BUT as long as i get to hunt coues with my rifle every year, i am happy! now, a elk or lope tag would make the year better!

i agree with the people who put in for once in a lifetime tags, dont get drawn with a handfull of points really have nothing to complain about... its a once in a lifetime tag... it could take a lifetime to draw!

i also think there should be a 3-5 year wait for a HIGH quality tag... ie archery elk in 1, 27, 9, 10... something where 380+come from every year.... i dont agree that 50-75% of the tags should be for max points only, that doesnt include much for people who have just started putting in for those hunts which basically puts us back where we began.... people only hunting archery elk every 10-15 years.... what good does it do if it doesnt change anything?

Nicely put.-

I went 9 yrs for my first bull tag and had 2 deer tags in that stretch. Since then I have changed my method

of where/when and how I put in. Since I did that I have had two archery bull tags in a row and they were NOT the

PREMIUM tags alot of you guys are applying for yr after yr. One of those tags was a acrhery November Bull tag and the other was another one of those non PREMIUM tags.

I have been down that path of trying to get 9 or 10 tag - but now all three of my girls are hunting and my wife as well.

So now I just stick with my system since they started hunting and thankfully we as a have pulled some tags over the last few yrs.

Any tag that I get now is a Premium tag or highly sought after tag in my eyes because I am watching my girls do

something now that took me 9-10 yrs to do and thats to be out trying to harvest them bulls.

I know alot of people only want the chance at a MONSTER bull and will hold out until you do get that tag and I hope you all get a chance to do so. I to would love to harvest a True monster ! And the only way thats going to happen is if he

is lost and just happens to come into one of my non premium units.

Instead of a waiting period, I prefer the way Utah does it.

Apply for Deer OR Elk, but not both. I know Utah also has a waiting period, but to me those have minimal effect on drawing odds. It only keeps people from drawing back to back, which is just a feel good thing.

If you had to choose between deer and bull elk or sheep and antelope, everyones odds would improve, I think. Especially with the way the internet apps are (easy and cheap).

If I get one decent to very good tag every 2-3 years, that is good enough for me. I archery hunt and like to hunt bear too, so I will always have some hunts lined up. I really don't want a lope, elk and deer tag in the same year. I can't put in the time each tag would deserve and it could go to someone who would could give it 100%.

So far I haven't had any hits on my card. I think it is safe to say I didn't get drawn. I now have 13 bonus points for bull elk. You want to know what my first choise was..... Archery, not rifle. I don't know how I didn't get drawn. I have given up on a rifle elk tag. Maybe next year I might get a drawn. :(

still having some faith my dad told me right now that at their hunting club meeting last night there was a game warden present and the issue was brought up. He said that they are still doing CC hits today and tomorrow so i figure it should be out on the web by Friday

Well, someone was askin' about how the NR's were doing, so here's how I appear to have done.

Last year I drew a rifle bull tag with 2 bp's. Signed that tag over to my son, and he took his elk on day 3. Out of both him and I applying for antelope and non-premium deer and elk, the elk tag was the only tag we've drawn in the last 3 years. I am not complaining because it's the precise hunt I've always wanted to take him on, and we got to do it.

This year I put him in for antelope (rifle 1st/ muzzy 2nd) and rifle bull elk 1st and 2nd choice (3 bp's), and put myself in for antelope (rifle 1st/ muzzy 2nd) and rifle bull 1st choice, and a late rifle cow hunt 2nd choice (0 bp's). It appears I've been drawn again (charge for $587 from G&F on the 14th, still there). It will be the late cow hunt this time undoubtedly, but I'm still very excited for the opportunity to hunt elk with my son again and put more elk meat in the freezer. If by some miracle it is a rifle bull tag again, I'm keeping this one for myself and will try to take a nice representative bull.

I put in for the unit I grew up in before I left AZ for the military at 18. That's 7W, and to me that is my "premium" unit and goes down as my 1st choice every time. No place else I'd rather hunt elk.

All this brings me to a question...there's a "10% non-resident cap" on tags. Being that it's a "cap" I'm assuming it's a maximum of 10% NR draw, and not that 10% of the tags are set aside and issued to NR's? Granted, I'm not applying for premium units, but I'm stunned I was able to draw a rifle bull with 2 bp's, and draw again the following year.

Rifle, Archery, or Muzzle Loader does not really dictate the "premium" hunts...... unit and time of year are what make up a "premium" hunt. There are many Archery hunts that are way harder to draw than most rifle tags. Look at the draw odds page at the back of the regs. any hunt with less than 5-6% draw odds is a "premium"...... although I know of a couple of hunts that are 10-12% that I also consider "premium". ;)
