muledeerarea33? Report post Posted November 2, 2014 It all started this morning. I've been really sick the past month and going stir crazy in the house. Feeling better yesterday and today I decided to head out for my hunt. I was out before sun up coffee in hand and the trusty rifle at my side. Grabbed my chair, set up on the back porch and started glassing. Like most other glassing sessions I saw lots of non game species, grass hoppers, birds, dogs, the cat, etc. glassed for a few hours before I decided to hike a bit. I've had pneumonia for the last two weeks so I took it easy but still put some distance on the house shoes! I walked a 200 yard circle around the house (spot and stock style) the wind was unreal! Gusting in every direction 5-20mph. I walked up on my prey two different times but both times I was eluded by his sly actions. Decided to make the hike back to camp (I mean the house) and cook some eggs. After a power house healthy meal of eggs, bacon, green chili, onion, mushroom, cheese, and pace, I was ready to go again! But the Z-PAC makes me poop so had to take care of business before I could take care of business if you know what I mean. A quick shower, change of clothes, and LOTS of TP later I was back on the hunt. Decided to sit water mid day so I sat next to the trough I have setup for quail and such. Wind still roaring I saw nothing. Around 2pm the antibiotic called again. Afterwards I decided to eat left over breakfast for lunch, mix a drink and head back out. If your not hunting all day then your not hunting at all! Sat on the porch again and glassed until my eyes were bleeding!! Finally around 4pm saw a set of floppy ears sticking out of a tree near the dry pond. I watched for an hour but it stayed bedded (dang wind!) finally when legal shooting light was almost out he stood up. I doped my scope for the distance and checked my wind and ranged him. With the hand truck as a rest I took 3 breaths and fired on exhale. The 702 plinkster (59.97 on roll back at the Walmart several years ago) with its Winchester wildcat lead bullet purchased at yellow front years ago hit its mark! I heard the wallop of lead hitting flesh and he dropped in his tracks. A quick high five to myself and the work began. I walked the 45 yards to the kill site and boned him out, packed him up and made the long trek back. Got back after dark just before the ice melted in my drink. Before anyone complains about such a long distance with this caliber I want to say I practice at these ranges and beyond several times a year and my fixed 4 power Bushnell is money! I haven't bought my rim fire reloading set up yet so hand loads aren't an option. Also the plinkster is aluminum bedded (don't ask how, but I did it) I taped him at just over 12" of ears gross without deductions. I only had one road hunter drive by although I think it was a rancher checking his cows. I was far enough off the road that it didn't bother my hunt luckily. I did lose my pack on this hunt but found it on the tailgate of the truck. No pics as of yet. They have been submitted to jackrabbit monthly in hopes of a good return. Big thanks to my wife for allowing us to move to the middle of nowhere and making this hunt possible. I thought about hiring a guide but it wasn't in the budget and i had no clue what % to tip!? The real hunter of my house is my terroir mix, she herds jacks into a 10' stick of 6" ABS on a regular basis and we have to free them from the torture. Unfortunately the dog was inside sleeping and did not care to help. Anyways, thanks for reading my adventure, pics will be posted as soon as its ok.
